Joan Chandos Baez [dəə ˈn ˈbaɪəz] (born January 9, 1941 in New York City) is an American folk singer and guitarist, civil rights activist, pacifist and environmental activist. She was best known for her characteristic soprano voice and her political commitment against the Vietnam War and racial segregation. She has been one of the icons of the American folk movement since the 1960s; her appearance in Woodstock is as famous as her love affair with Bob Dylan. As the “voice and conscience of her generation”, the “Queen of Folk” gained influence not only in the US protest scene, but also internationally.

She has released more than 30 albums in the six decades of her musical career, mainly in English and Spanish. Her greatest successes include interpretations of folk classics and foreign compositions such as We Shall Overcome, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Here’s to You or Farewell, Angelina and her own composition Diamonds & Rust.

In addition to the knighthood of the French Legion of Honor, she has received numerous awards, including two honorary doctorates, two Bambis, the Grammy for her Life’s Work (2007) and the Woody Guthrie Prize for her musical life’s work and humanitarian commitment (2020). In 2017 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
