Ludwig Daser’s life and work encompassed both Catholic and Lutheran courts, at Munich and Stuttgart respectively. Cinquecento’s programme—which, besides the substantial Missa Pater noster, includes a selection of Latin motets and German chorale settings—illustrates a variety of styles and genres from both, offering a welcome introduction to this lesser-known master from the sixteenth century.

After releasing one furious, political album and an introspective, existential one, Torgeir Waldemar concluded that the world hadn’t improved too much. In turbulent times, where walls are erected and hate and xenophobia seems widespread, what should be the main message for the new record? The answer was simple, almost banal – the most important thing we have is one another – love.

In the time of Madame de Pompadour, the hurdy-gurdy, like the musette, enjoyed a great success. It was considered to be on a level with other instruments and, as can be seen in various paintings, was highly regarded by the ladies of the aristocracy.

Several books of instruction for the instrument were published, one of which was Michel Corrette’s La belle vielleuse; virtuoso players such as Danguy and Dupuits extended its playing techniques to their limits. The instrument’s charm was sung by various poets whose words were then set as cantatas. The unknown works that constitute this recording place it firmly in the French court of the time with its stylised pastoral diversions.

Listeners are invited to discover ‘old’ and ‘new’ in completely fresh ways through these multifaceted interpretations.

Henrik Hellstenius’s intense yet unassuming exploration of the interacting worlds of sound and time has spanned more than three decades. That hunger for discovery is perhaps the single most unifying feature across his life and work. It was already forming rapidly in his youth, from his teenage years spent listening to Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek to his studies of spectral music with Gerard Grisey in Paris.

Anoushka Shankar, the acclaimed sitar player, producer and composer, shares a new mini-album: Chapter I: Forever, For Now.

Recorded at Berlin’s celebrated Funkhaus complex, the four new tracks make up the first chapter in a trilogy of mini-albums Shankar will be writing and releasing as an evolving story between tours. Featuring guest appearances by Nils Frahm (piano, glass harmonica, harmonium, slit drum), Gal Maestro (bass) and Magda Giannikou (accordion), ‘Forever, For Now’ was produced by praised Grammy-decorated singer and composer Arooj Aftab, with whom Shankar had previously collaborated on ‘Udhero Na’, from the deluxe edition of Aftab’s Vulture Prince album.

Forever, For Now is Shankars first release since December 2022’s standalone single, ‘In Her Name’, which commemorated the tenth anniversary of the 2012 gang rape in Delhi of Jyoti Singh Pandey, and the mini-album also follows Between Us…, her live album for LEITER earlier the same year, recorded with Jules Buckley and the Metropole Orkest and nominated for a Grammy for Best Global Album in 2023.

Forever, For Now’s dominant mood is set by the bewitching stillness of the opening ‘Daydreaming (featuring Nils Frahm)’, a fresh take on a traditional Karnatik lullaby.

It’s a well-known cliché: two heads are better than one. Two years after his debut album, the 24-year-old London multi-instrumentalist Tom Misch (who has a distinctly Jamiroquai-esque sound) has partnered up with 27-year-old drummer/producer Yussef Dayes (the brain behind United Vibrations and one half of the electro-jazz duo Yussef Kamaal) for this irresistible album What Kinda Music. Up until now, Misch has cooked up a gourmet mix of smooth jazz syrup, funky foam, droplets of soul, hip-hop spices and a pinch of velvety pop, inviting along a star-studded line-up including De La Soul, GoldLink, Loyle Carner and Poppy Ajudha while sampling from the likes of Roy Hargrove, The Crusaders, Stevie Wonder and Patrick Watson. All these flavours and sounds form the foundation of this 2020 vintage, making the rhythmic side even more solid. Yussef Dayes jazzes up his interventions and makes his improvisations even more sophisticated. Each artist brings their own contribution to this truly collaborative work and the record strikes a perfect balance of voice and instrumentals. Both artists grew up in Peckham in South London and Tom Misch even saw Dayes play drums in the school talent show when he was 9! “Yussef comes from a more experimental background, and he has a lot of loose, crazy ideas. I know how to write a catchy melody, but with interesting chords and I have a good understanding of popular song forms, so I think I streamlined those ideas and made them accessible.”

You’d never know it to look at film of him today, but during the summer of 1956, Tommy Steele became England’s first home-grown rock & roller. Or he wasn’t a rock & roller at all. Some 43 years after he first charted a record, many pop music scholars still question whether Tommy Steele belongs on a list of rock & roll performers. But whatever he was, in 1956, England had never seen anything quite like him. He was born Tommy Hicks on December 17, 1936, in Bermondsey, South London, to a working-class family. In 1952, at age 15, he joined the merchant navy, and for the next four years, he worked on the Cunard line. He was hospitalized at one point during his time at Cunard, and during his convalescence, learned to play the guitar. Hicks began singing and performing for his fellow merchant seamen and discovered that he had a natural ability as an entertainer, with a special affinity for country & western songs, and for comedy.

Tommie Young – Do You Still Feel the Same Way (1973/2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Tommie Young – Do You Still Feel the Same Way (1973/2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 28:38 minutes | 304 MB | Genre: R&B
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Soul Power Records

This is absolute manna from Southern soul heaven. On the strength of the one, long-unavailable 1973 LP that forms the core of this compilation, Tommie Young can stake a claim as perhaps the finest neo-Aretha Franklin stylist among the slew of early-’70s soul sisters. But she was a meteor flare, almost immediately retreating back to the gospel scene that nurtured her, save for singing lead on the soundtrack to A Woman Called Moses, Cicely Tyson’s 1978 film about Harriet Tubman. Granted, Young didn’t have the protean power of Franklin (like anyone did?), so her vocal tone is lighter; but the sensational, effortless, melodic leaps on the commanding title track does nothing to dispel the Franklin impression. “Do We Have a Future?” is punchier and might be rushed for a singer lacking Young’s immaculate phrasing; she’s simply a natural-born singer with the same appealing forthrightness as Irma Thomas. The liner notes say producer Bobby Patterson cut backing tracks to O.V. Wright’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is” and Percy Sledge’s “Take Time to Know Her” (gender-switched here) for her first session and Young just walked in and nailed ’em in one take — and it ain’t hard to believe at all. “You Came Just in Time” finds Young fighting through backing vocal clutter, but the ballads “She Don’t Have to See You (to See Through You)” and “You Brought It All on Yourself” thankfully free her voice back to unadorned basics, with great command of dynamics and phrasing on the latter. Brilliant phrasing also marks the very strong “You Can Only Do Wrong So Long” and she shines again on the more down-home funky “You Can’t Have Your Cake” with some Ann Peebles vocal sass in her delivery.
