Belgian group playing “civilized rock music”, with a career spanning the seventies to the nineties.
The album “The Split” was released in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Switzerland, New-Zealand, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. According to the bio: “There was much more contrast in the music by incorporating synths (with Werner Pensaert, who would become a regular member soon afterwards). The point that was perhaps most unique was the vocals : two singers with a totally different sound and timbre made Toy stand out. With this album it was proven that a Flemish group was capable of putting together a balanced album that was up to international standards”.
However “The Split” didn’t become a landmark album : “Too much cut- and paste technique by Harry Woods and Theo Van Hemelryk, and not enough strong melodies.” was the verdict by Oor. “I think we suffered from the “Big Disappointment” among the media people” said singer Harry Woods later “Everyone was expecting a bit too much. When the “Big Breakthrough” didn’t happen, everybody was disappointed.”

Spirituals, blues, soul and roots music form the creative foundation for ‘Thank You Baby!’ ‘This kind of music was familiar to me as a young lad. When Siggi Loch suggested devoting my new album to this music, I immediately was really keen. I didn’t want to wallow in nostalgia though, but express myself through it,’ says Goods, referring to the preparations for the new album. Goods’ warm-sounding, fast picking guitar, his flexible phrasing and smooth vocals; Haffner’s uniquely bouncy drums; Di Gioia’s inspirational, effervescent piano and Fender Rhodes; Lefebvre’s concise bass; all of these merge to form distinctively new, convincing interpretations: The irresistibly rolling, archaic ‘Work Song’ (Nat Adderley), the nicely relaxed ‘Hallelujah – Love Her So’ (Ray Charles), or the killer swing in Marvin Gaye’s famous Motown classic ‘How Sweet It Is’. Goods mentions the ‘magic’ that set in at the recording sessions, with a real understanding for groove and musical reduction. It was a conscious decision to choose a compact 4-piece line-up: ‘The idea was to make the music sound pure and like a live studio performance, and just as they would have done it in the sixties.’ Goods and his fellow musicians have embraced the repertoire with love and devotion, deeply touching the listener’s emotion.

The spirit of Charles Mingus is present, most clearly in the quartet’s treatment of “What Love” (Mingus’ epic deconstruction of the Cole Porter standard “What Is This Thing Called Love”). But the focus on this new outing is original music, played with drive and ceaseless invention by alto saxophonist Greg Ward, trumpeter Russ Johnson and drummer Dana Hall joining the leader on bass.
