Thorwald Jørgensen – Air électrique: Original Music for Theremin & Piano (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Spooky sounds and ghostly wailings are usually what come to mind when people imagine the sound of the theremin. With “Air Électrique”, Thorwald Jorgensen and Kamilla Bystrova go beyond the novelty of the theremin and let the music speak for itself.

With the premier recording of Lera Auerbach’s 10 Preludes for theremin and piano, the standard of the album is set. This compositional tour-de-force presents colourful melodic music which exploits the unique characteristics of both the theremin and the piano. The angular modernism of Lydia Kavina’s Suite for theremin and piano and Olesya Rostovskaya’s haunting Juliet show more of the theremin’s unrivalled sonic possibilities, clearly illustrating what is possible with this combination of instruments.

The album also presents two chamber music pieces. The first is the world premiere of Joseph Schillinger’s Bury, Bury me Wind, in which Thorwald and Kamilla are joined by mezzo soprano, Itzel Medecigo. The other is the spectacular Fantasy for theremin, xylophone and piano by Valery Beluntsov, in which Thorwald plays not only the theremin but also the virtuosic xylophone part.

Thorsteinn Einarsson is an Icelandic singer based in Vienna, Austria. His second studio album, INGI. “1;” (one continued) is followed by “IngI” – actually “Ingi”, but the big i at the end forms the Roman numeral 2 in combination with the initial i. Understood? No? No matter, because much more important are anyway the very personal texts in which Thorsteinn Ingi (aha!) Einarsson leads us through his melancholy to euphoric Pop-feeling worlds with his unmistakable voice.

Thomas Zehetmair & Orchestre de chambre de Paris – Robert Schumann (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Founded in 1978, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris quickly established its reputation as one of Europe’s leading chamber orchestras. In 2012, Thomas Zehetmair was appointed the orchestra’s principal conductor and artistic advisor and on this recording, made at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in February 2014, does double duty as both soloist and conductor. Zehetmair’s insightful approach to Robert Schumann has already been demonstrated on ECM New Series with the Zehtmair Quartet, whose recording of the Schumann string quartets won prizes including the Gramophone Award as Album of the Year in 2003. Here the Orchestre de chamber de Paris plays the Symphony no. 1 “Spring” (1841) and the Phantasie for Violin and Orchestra and the Violin Concerto (both 1853). The composition of the first symphony drew inspiration from Schubert’s 9th Symphony and from the poetry of Adolf Böttger. The Phantasie and the Violin Concerto had quite different fates. The Phantasie was premiered to huge acclaim after initial performances. The Violin Concerto had to wait more than 80 years for its premiere, and too often since then players have made adjustments to the violin part. Thomas Zehetmair reveals how urgent and convincing the impact of Schuman’s original version can be when the performers enter into its spirit.

Thomas Zehetmair’s manually overwhelming and thought-provoking ECM recording of the complete sonatas for unaccompanied violin by Eugène Ysaÿe – released in 2004 to great critical acclaim – offered ample proof that alleged virtuoso pyrotechnics can be surprinsingly multi-faceted and complex when approached by a musician with a rare awareness of stylistic layers and expressive traditions. His (long deleted) Teldec version of the Capricci dating from the early nineties quickly won the status of a new benchmark recording. In 2007 he went to the Austrian monastery of St. Gerold to record a second – even more ambitious – interpretation. In an interview with English journalist Ivan Hewett Zehetmair recently explained his ever-growing interest in this particular repertoire: ‘Every violinist grows up with these pieces, because they are such fantastic technical studies. Paganini sometimes had these showman’s tricks, like playing on only one or two strings. But you know, all the great musicians who heard him, like Schumann, took him totally seriously. These Caprices aren’t just studies, or showpieces. They’re improvised character pieces, so full of poetry and fantasy.’

Food has defined a new kind of lyrical electro-acoustic improvisation in the course of its twelve year existence. Founded as a quartet in 1998, since 2006 the group has been a core duo of UK saxophonist Iain Ballamy and Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen joined by guests for diverse projects. At the Molde Jazz Festival and the Oslo Blå club in 2007/8 their guests were trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, well known to ECM followers, and Austrian improvising guitarist Christian Fennesz making his label debut. The resultant music, with melodic improvising, trancelike pulses, and shifting clouds of sound is highly attractive.

A fresh and open music, delicate and space-conscious, is shaped as drummer Thomas Strønen and Ayumi Tanaka, previously heard in the ensemble Time Is A Blind Guide on Lucus, resurface in a new trio with clarinettist/singer/percussionist Marthe Lea. The group first came together at Oslo’s Royal Academy of Music, where for two years the players would meet each week for exploratory music making. Strønen: “We always played freely- drifting between elements of contemporary classical music, folk music, jazz, whatever we were inspired by. Sometimes the music was very quiet and minimalistic: playing together generated some special experiences.” The spontaneous spirit of the music is reflected in the trio’s debut recording, which was made at the Lugano radio studio and produced by Manfred Eicher. With the exception of the title piece, based on a traditional Norwegian tune, the music on Bayou was collectively created in the moment.

“Time” is a guiding principle in any drummer’s ensemble, not least when it is subtly subdivided or extended as it is in this debut by Thomas Strønen’s acoustic group. The name derives from a literary source, “Time is a blind guide” being the first sentence in Canadian author Anne Michaels’s 1996 novel Fugitive Pieces.

This is how Volume 2 was born in the story of Supersonic, a bird from the divine Sun Ra’s nest and who now goes flying: it is called “Sons Of Love. »
