The Apocalypse Blues Revue is coming back strong with this second album released by Provogue, The Shape Of Blues To Come. A rather dangerous music! Did the Florida-based American band sell their soul to the devil in exchange for such mastery of electric blues? The question can be raised. Made up of Shannon Larkin (drums), Brian Carpenter (bass), Ray Cerbone (vocals) and Tony Rombola (guitar), the quartet respects the essence of blues while still imposing their own style. Right from the first track, Open Spaces, the suspense is at its peak. A gong, followed by whispers, then a deep, wearisome singing, almost voodoo-esque. In 2016, the band had already taken this path down to the purgatory with their first eponymous album. Two years later, they venture towards hell itself, for a diabolical concert. Between metal and roots music, the Apocalypse Blues Revue is capable of composing around blues as well as moving away from it. With them, boredom is forbidden. Incendiary riffs, an energetic voice swinging on the chorus of Have You Heard?! and carried by Larkin’s rhythmic force… There’s nothing to envy to heaven! There is a Morrison vibe to To Hell With You, but in this case Jim would be dressed in a rather Goth style to announce the apocalypse and the quartet’s takeover. – Anna Coluthe

Label: Bomp Records | Release: 1977

To say Iggy Pop had hit bottom in 1975 is an understatement; after the final collapse of the Stooges, Iggy sank deep into drug addiction and depression, and he eventually checked himself into a mental hospital in a desperate effort to get himself clean and functional again. At the same time, James Williamson, his guitarist and writing partner in the last edition of the Stooges, still believed their collaboration had some life in it, and he talked his way into Jimmy Webb’s home studio to record demos in hopes of scoring a record deal. Iggy checked out of the hospital for a weekend to cut vocal tracks, and while the demos they made were quite good, no record companies were willing to take a chance on them. The tapes sat unnoticed until 1977, when Bomp! Records issued the 1975 demos under the title Kill City after Iggy launched a comeback with the David Bowie-produced The Idiot. Kill City never hits as hard as the manic roar of the Stooges’ Raw Power, but the songs are very good, and the album’s more measured approach suits the dark, honest tone of the material. The sense of defeat that runs through “Sell Your Love,” “I Got Nothin’,” and “No Sense of Crime” was doubtless a mirror of Iggy’s state of mind, but he expressed his agony with blunt eloquence, and his sneering rejection of the Hollywood street scene in “Lucky Monkeys” is all the more cutting coming from a man who had lived through the worst of it. And in the title song, Iggy expressed his state of mind and sense of purpose with a fierce clarity: “If I have to die here, first I’m going to make some noise.” Considering Iggy’s condition in 1975, his vocals are powerful and full-bodied, as good as anything on his solo work of the 1970s. The music is more open and bluesy than on Raw Power, and while Williamson’s guitar remains thick and powerful, here he’s willing to make room for pianos, acoustic guitars, and saxophones, and the dynamics of the arrangements suggest a more mature approach after the claustrophobia of Raw Power. Kill City is rough, flawed, and dark, but it also takes the pain of Iggy’s nightmare days and makes something affecting out of it, and considering its origins, it’s a minor triumph. (more…)

Iggy Pop – Blah-Blah-Blah (1986) [England First Press] [Vinyl Rip WavPack 32bit/192kHz]

In 1983, Iggy Pop’s career was in shambles, but an unexpected windfall arrived thanks to Iggy’s frequent benefactor David Bowie. Bowie recorded “China Girl,” a song Bowie and Pop co-wrote, for his album Let’s Dance, earning Iggy some large (and much-needed) royalty checks. Wisely realizing he was running out of second chances, Iggy decided to make the most of his good fortune; he steered clear of drugs, learned to cook his own meals, started putting money in the bank, and used his savings to bankroll a new album. David Bowie offered to help, and together they came up with Blah Blah Blah, the most calculatedly commercial album of Iggy’s career. Like The Idiot, Blah Blah Blah was heavily influenced by Bowie’s input; however, while The Idiot was made by a man creating intelligent and ambitious art rock, Blah Blah Blah is the work of a popmeister looking for hits and not afraid to sound cheesy about it. In the liner notes, a member of Duran Duran is thanked for the loan of a drum machine, and that speaks volumes about the production; Blah Blah Blah is slick in a very ’80s way, dominated by preprogrammed percussion and swirling keyboards. And in the four years since Zombie Birdhouse, Iggy hadn’t come up with much in the way of material; the only truly memorable tracks are “Real Wild Child (Wild One),” a neat bit of electro-processed rockabilly (previously a hit for Australian rocker Johnny O’Keefe), and the moody “Cry for Love,” co-written by former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. Both of these songs were minor hits, so Blah Blah Blah succeeded on its obviously commercial terms, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s one of Iggy’s least interesting albums, and has dated worse than almost anything he’s ever recorded.

Award winning soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom has always had a special feeling for ballad performances. So much so that she has now finally released: Sixteen Sunsets, a beautiful new recording featuring expressive interpretations from the American Songbook along with five compelling slow tempo original compositions.

Jane Ira Bloom has been steadfastly developing her unique voice on the soprano saxophone for over 30 years. She is a pioneer in the use of live electronics and movement in jazz, as well as the possessor of “one of the most gorgeous tones and hauntingly lyrical ballad conceptions of any soprano saxophonist.”
The fourteen tracks on Sixteen Sunsets feature nine American songbook classics including: Gershwin’s ”I Loves You Porgy,” Kern’s ”The Way You Look Tonight,” Arlen’s ”Out of This World,” Weill’s ”My Ship,” Jimmy Van Heusen’s ”Darn That Dream,” and Billie Holiday & Mal Waldron’s ”Left Alone,” among others. There are also five originals from Bloom s ballad repertoire including: ”What She Wanted,” ”Ice Dancing” (for Torvill & Dean), ”Gershwin’s Skyline,” ”Too Many Reasons,” and ”Bird Experiencing Light.” Photographic legend Jay Maisel contributed his breathtaking image: ”Maine Forest At Dawn” for the album cover art. What if John Coltrane’s Atlantic period was really his most exciting? After his great years under the Prestige and Blue Note banners, and before his fulminating recordings for Impulse!, the saxophonist would work for Ahmet Ertegun’s firm between 1959 and 1961. There, he would record four essential records which are held by some to be the quintessence of Coltrane’s art: Giant Steps (his first album made up exclusively of his own compositions) in 1960, Coltrane Jazz (his first collaboration with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones), My Favorite Things and Ol Coltrane(with Eric Dolphy), all three released in 1961. Although he was no longer signed with Atlantic, he would nevertheless release The Avant-Garde (where he was co-leader with Don Cherry), Coltrane Plays The Blues and Coltrane’s Sound. Nine numbers from this golden age have been selected for Trane: The Atlantic Collection. Remastered and available in Hi-Res 24-bit quality, for sure they represent 46 minutes of total genius, but it is difficult and frustrating to find oneself limited to this short selection, when the rest of albums count among the most essential pages in the history of jazz. With these records, the uniqueness of Coltrane finally breaks out into broad daylight. His style, which was unique at the time – technically and harmonically – literally moulded the canons of bop and proposed a totally different road to that being taken at the time by Miles Davis with Kind Of Blue, his angular brick of modal jazz. Upon its release, a large part of the jazzosphere was more than shocked by the complexity of the creations of Coltrane and his collaborators. Today, all the music presented in Trane: The Atlantic Collection has naturally passed into the pages of history. And re-listening to it, in the fine style in which it’s presented here, is an essential service that should be provided free to all on the NHS… (more…)

Launching his Mozart debut recorded with the Czech Philharmonic and Jiří Bělohlávek (Supraphon 2017), Jan Bartoš drew to himself a lot of critical attention on an international scale. Those who reviewed the album especially appreciated his rare ability to combine thorough understanding both of the musical architecture and the deep emotionality of the works (a quality possessed also by the pianist’s tutors Ivan Moravec and Alfred Brendel). From the early “Haydn-like” Sonata No. 3 in C major to the highly dramatic “Appassionata” to the transcendent last Sonata No. 32 in C minor, which gives an impression of the composer parting with this world, the pianist facilitates to us the amazing integrity and colourfulness of Beethoven’s piano work. During the thirty years separating his first and last piano opus, the composer tried out numberless experiments, and yet some crucial themes come up again and again; the imprint of his unique musical DNA is discernible from his very first opuses. In the hands of Jan Bartoš, Beethoven whispers, sings and thunders. We encounter a world full of contrasts, an image whose colours remain impressed in our memory for a long time. (more…)

Following his 2011 landmark Beethoven symphonic cycle, Riccardo Chailly and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra return with new recordings of the complete Brahms symphonies as well as other orchestral works including overtures and the Haydn Variations.
The collection also features world premieres of two orchestrated piano intermezzi, and the nine Liebeslieder waltzes, the original first performance version of the Andante from Symphony No. 1 and the even rarer revised opening of the Fourth Symphony.
Since recording the Brahms symphonies 25 years ago, Chailly’s approach is radically rethought, re-examining the scores and the recorded interpretations of an earlier generation of conductors to bring a fresh, new and dramatic reading.

“For most listeners’ purposes, Riccardo Chailly’s set of Johannes Brahms’ four symphonies will seem standard-issue, with respectable and uncontroversial interpretations from an esteemed conductor, and rich and resonant performances by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Even in the choice of filler pieces, the set includes the three orchestral works that are usually packaged with the symphonies: the Tragic Overture, the Haydn Variations, and the Academic Festival Overture. However, this set offers welcome suprises and extra value for the purchase. Two orchestral arrangements of the Interludes, Opp. 116 and 117 for piano, are included, along with instrumental versions of a handful of Liebeslieder Waltzes and three of the orchestrated Hungarian Dances, which may be incentives to listeners who are looking for a little more. Also included are Brahms’ original version of the Andante of the First Symphony and the alternate opening of the Fourth. But no one should invest in a set solely on the basis of these extras, however unusual they may be. Since first recording the cycle with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, where he offered a rather heavy-handed modern take on the symphonies, Chailly has gone back to an older, more historically informed style of playing Brahms that was familiar to conductors of the early 20th century. The music is lighter and more transparent, so in some ways, his recordings are sometimes reminiscent of classic performances by Bruno Walter, George Szell, and other revered conductors. For traditionalists, this is a fine set to own, especially if a fresh digital recording is needed.” –Blair Sanderson, AllMusic (more…)

Presumably taking his cue from Ein Heldenleben, the author of the program notes makes a big deal of the concept of the hero in music. The connection with Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto is more nebulous. Yes, the music is generally heroic in a Beethovenian sense, but it does not have a program about a hero. In that context, Mitsuko Uchida is an elite pianist who hardly takes a heroic approach to Beethoven. Despite an unexpectedly forceful entry in the first movement, Uchida’s style quickly emerges to the forefront. Her playing has been correctly described as elegant, refined, transparent, poetic, controlled, and relatively laid back. As a specialist in Mozart and Beethoven, she leans toward the classical side of Beethoven, and that approach is very refreshing. There is also no lack of power when absolutely necessary, but it is invariably applied with restraint. Anyone who thinks that Uchida lacks gravitas for big Beethoven should listen to the Largo. Mariss Jansons is in complete accord with her approach.
Jansons launches Ein Heldenleben at a nearly ideal middle-of-the-road tempo, but then seems to run out of energy in the middle of the first section before recovering at the end. The clattering woodwinds and brass in “The Hero’s Adversaries” are outstanding. Concertmaster Anton Barachovsky’s seductively sweet tone is mesmerizing in “The Hero’s Companion” and the ending. The climaxes in “The Hero’s Companion” are absolutely ravishing. Jansons’s tempo in “The Hero’s Battlefield” is fairly expansive, but I really like it because it gives him the chance to bring out some incredible instrumental detail and unashamedly highlight Strauss’s gorgeous sound world, as he shows off the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s amazing brass section. The ending with its violin and French horn solos is stunning, and Barachovsky gets his deserved ovation.
As I heard the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra play this music, I could only think that this is undoubtedly one of the greatest orchestras in the world, and the best in terms of precise ensemble. I feared that Jansons might be ill at ease with Strauss’s florid romanticism, but he doesn’t shy away from it at all. It is interesting to see Jansons sometimes pull in his baton as if to just let the orchestra go and do its thing.
Technically, the picture and sound (PCM stereo and DTS 5.0 surround) are all that you would expect from a Blu-ray disc. I have no major problems with the visual direction as it alternates between various close-ups and distant shots, except perhaps that some of the extreme close-ups of Uchida and Jansons seem to be almost intrusive.
Don’t miss this if you are interested in hearing a great orchestra make music that is outstanding in every conceivable way. (more…)

The musical notes of this Puccini masterpiece provide the starting point and foundation for a new, highly successful collaboration between Riccardo Chailly and Davide Livermore. In their interpretation, there is ‘no moment, no movement that goes against the musical meaning’ (Chailly). The result is an energetic, authentic and atmospherically strong Boheme, ‘in which every sacred phrase receives its own orchestral color, its own dynamic, and its own expression’ (Corriere della Sera).

Telarc Records recently put out a compilation disc honoring the Brazilian songwriter Ivan Lins. Titled A Love Affair, it features some of America’s biggest pop and jazz names, including Sting, Dianne Reeves, Vanessa Williams, and Chaka Khan. Producing and directing the affair is keyboardist Jason Miles, the brains behind Telarc’s recent Weather Report tribute. While the record, and Lins’s music generally, tends toward “smooth jazz” at times, many of the tracks grab you with their irresistible melodic lilt and harmonic movement. Vanessa Williams’s version of “Love Dance” is a knockout, and Dianne Reeves’s delectable “Sweet Presence” is also a keeper. Lins has a gift; that much is undeniable.
