Yoann Loustalot is a melodic and singular voice of the European trumpet, with a unique sound. For this new trio, he brings together the guitarist Giani Caserotto and the drummer Stefano Lucchini. The music proposed by the group oscillates between compositions and total improvisations. – This atypical trio, formed by these exceptional musicians, takes us into its poetic and virtuoso universe. – In the mid-1990s, Dave Douglas’s Tiny Bell Trio had already carved out a niche in this unusual playing configuration: trumpet, guitar and drums. Here, Yoann Loustalot’s Yéti Trio experiments with this orchestral formula, and records a first LP that makes a mark. This trio is, associated to the delicate and vehement trumpet or to the sovereign and capricious flugelhorn of the leader-artist Yoann Loustalot; its crest lines, its loving murmurs, the dilating lyricism of Giani Caserotto’s guitar; its supersonic saturations and other zebras, and the voluptuousness and other rhythmic intensities of Stefano Lucchini’s drums; its nuances and other veins. Clearly a superlative listening (jazz privileges the being together, this game of egos without the heaviness and other impediments of the ego). Listening, space, fluidity, mobility. This is a powerfully orchestral triangular game; versatile, the functions of each other change. At the turn of the moment. The nine tracks on this record are only first takes; you can hear it. What do we know about the Yeti (a valid word for scrabble), that abominable snowman who lives in the high Himalayas in Tibet? What do we know about the music of the Yeti Trio? That it goes its own way, in progress, intense, shrouded in solar beauty, snowed under by flashes and purity. (Franck Médioni)
