1957年9月にベルリンのグリューネヴァルト教会で収録されたメニューインによるブラームスを世界初SACD化。品位があり高度な精神性も有した名盤として名高いこの演奏は、ケンペとベルリン・フィルによる職人的とも言える技量に支えられ、歴史的にも重要な音源として位置付けられています。併録として1956年モノラル録音の”ハイドン変奏曲”をカップリング。本国のオリジナル・アナログ・マスターテープから192kHz/24bitでデジタル化したマスターを用い、SACD層、CD層別々にマスタリング。新規解説付。永久保存盤です。
メニューイン(1916.4.22-1999.3.12)がこのブラームスを録音した時期は、幼少期以降の技術的な面を打ち出した演奏から脱却し、作品の音楽性を内面に秘めたスタイルに変えてきた頃です。この演奏ではむしろそれが貫徹されていないのではとの評価が一部にあったことで、この演奏がその後、必ずしも第一線に残ったとは言い難い状況でした。CD以後では再発の機会が少なく、むしろ埋もれた状態だったと言えます。また、このステレオ盤の録音状態がCD初期時代の復刻では必ずしも良く無かったことも一因としてあるかも知れません。今回のオリジナルのアナログ・マスターテープも経年変化があり、特に第1楽章では一部劣化が見受けられました。それでも尚、かつての響きを取り戻すべく高品位での最新デジタル化とマスタリングを今回行いました。高音質化により細部まで見通せるようになったことで、当時の雰囲気やメニューインの演奏がより把握できるようになりました。この演奏の素晴らしさを再発見できると思います。一方、伴奏をしているケンペとベルリン・フィルはこの時期録音する機会も多く、1955年から60年にかけていくつもの名盤を生み出しました。ブラームスは交響曲全集も完成し(TDSA150として2020年5月に当企画で発売済)、古き良き時代のオケの音色を残した演奏として現代でも聴き継がれている名演です。メニューインとの演奏でもその手綱さばきは絶妙で、当時両者はどれほどの完成度を誇っていたのかが良くわかる演奏となっています。尚、カップリングのハイドン変奏曲は元々バッハの管弦楽組曲第3番との組み合わせで発売された音源です。前述の交響曲全集(TDSA150)には未収録でしたので、今回時間的な余裕もあり余白に加えました。モノラルとはいえその凝縮された重厚な演奏には心が動かされます。
