This collection of previously unreleased live recordings celebrates the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra’s centenary and the ten-year residency, from 2008 to 2018, of its principal conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

The Rotterdam Philharmonic, under its long-term Principal Conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin, is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most distinguished orchestras. Celebrated for its winning combination of passionate commitment, boundless energy and scintillating virtuosity, the orchestra has come a long way since its relatively humble beginnings in 1918 as a private ensemble whose members initially paid for the privilege of joining its ranks.

The arrival of Canadian maestro Yannick Nezet-Seguin in 2008 signalled a new golden era for the Rotterdam Philharmonic, as is evidenced by this outstanding set of recordings, captured live in the Doelen concert hall between 2011 and 2016 and collected together here for the first time by Deutsche Grammophon. At the end of 2017/18 season Nezet-Seguin assumes the role of Honorary Conductor, handing over the post of Principal to 29-year-old Lahav Shani.

Introducing the international debut Deutsche Grammophon orchestral album from leading French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the distinguished Philadelphia Orchestra. A powerful musical tribute to the mighty Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977), 35 years after his death, from the young conductor who now continues his legacy. Stokowski spent some of his most important and fruitful years in charge of the orchestra in Philadelphia, in a position that brought him some of his greatest accomplishments. Musical showmanship, free-thinking and a populist approach to contemporary music are characteristics of Stokowski’s distinguished conducting and recording career.

This new album focuses on Stravinsky’s daring, revolutionary and game-changing ballet score, The Rite of Spring – given its American premiere performance by Stokowski and his Philadelphia Orchestra, and a work that reaches its centenary milestone in 2013.

Plus a selection of popular Stokowski transcriptions, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor (J. S. Bach), as heard in its Stokowski version in Disney’s classic Mickey Mouse movie, Fantasia.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin – Rachmaninoff: Symphony 1 + Symphonic Dances (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

The Philadelphia Orchestra and their Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin are embarking on another project of Rachmaninoff’s works, presenting his three Symphonies and other orchestral works. When Rachmaninoff’s 1st Symphony was premiered in 1897 by a badly prepared orchestra the performance turned out to be a disaster which obviously hurt the young composer deeply, not even 24 years old. Yet, later decades proved this early work to be absolutely worth a listen when performed by a first-class orchestra and conductor.

This album will be the first of three Rachmaninoff releases with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, followed by recordings of Symphony No. 2 and The Isle of the Death in 2022 and, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s birthday in 2023, Symphony No. 3 and The Bells.
This first album is available for pre-order now and will be released January 29, 2020. Listen to the pre-release track Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Op. 45: II. Andante con moto. Tempo di valse now!

Famous conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin is also a versatile pianist. In Summer 2020, when the pandemic turned down most of the cultural life all over the world, he found, as he describes it, “kind of a salvation” in playing the piano – and recorded his very first Piano Solo Album, inspired also by the memory of his admired teacher Anisia Campos who had passed away that year.
