Even before Simon Rattle gave his debut concert as head of the Berliner Philharmoniker, he made headlines with another world-class orchestra: It was the cycle of nine Beethoven symphonies that he conducted with the Vienna Philharmonic in Tokyo, Berlin and – of course – Vienna. Back in May 2002, Rattle set standards with the most traditional orchestral repertoire of all. The live recording was released in March 2003. This cycle, which is now being re-released in the budget segment, is still regarded as the reference recording of the new millennium.

This 2017 concert, on the market by the end of the second week in January, marked the first Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert led by the sensational Venezuelan-American conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Those hoping, or fearing, that he would shake up the repertory of this Vienna institution, are given little material to work with; the program follows the time-honored pattern, with the Strauss family in the foremost position and The Beautiful Blue Danube in its proper place in the encores. This said, Dudamel’s New Year’s Concert is fresh and energetic, and really a great deal of fun. The Viennese audience rewards him with warm applause and as much enthusiasm as Viennese can muster. He introduces quite a few pieces that are new to the concert, closing out the first half with the utterly charming Pepita-Polka, Op. 138, an unjustly neglected masterpiece of Johann Strauss II. There are no fewer than four Johann II premieres, and among the other newcomers is the familiar Skaters’ Waltz (Les Patineurs) of Emile Waldteufel. In the main Strauss pieces, Dudamel applies his high-energy but precise sound to this highly familiar material, and lo and behold it works: there are foot-tappers galore, but the characteristic Strauss humor is not lost. Sample the Rotunde-Quadrille, Op. 360, of Johann II for an idea, and note that the sound quality on the New Year’s Concert release gets just a little better each year. The New Year’s Concert, far from being a moribund tradition, is a growing phenomenon, broadcast as far afield as Indonesia and Mozambique. With satisfying performances like these, that trend seems likely to continue. ~~ Review by James Manheim

«Clearly Bruckner’s music is like the wind that bloweth where it listeth in a world far removed from capitals and concert halls. The music that Bruckner wrote was not chic and sophisticated but elemental, radical and uncompromising. In spite of all its art, there is a powerful affinity with nature, with the mysticism of nature and with a sense of autochthonous earthiness, notably in Bruckner’s dance movements: as Thielemann says, Bruckner is no poseur; his music is never pretentious. There is a closeness, finally, with the open countryside, with an endless expanse, with extended journeys and with slowness.»

The Vienna Philharmonic, who have premiered four out of Bruckner’s ‘9 Symphonies’ are familiar to his music unlike any other orchestra. With Christian Thielemann they have one of the few Bruckner experts on their side. Bruckner (1824-1896) was an Austrian composer best known for his ‘Symphonies’, ‘Masses’ and ‘Motets’. Bruckner was greatly admired by subsequent composers, including his friend Gustav Mahler.

The institutions of classical music change and evolve, but the Vienna New Year’s Concert presented by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, now in its 76th year, remains a pure tradition. That’s not to say that there’s no new music on the program. The 2015 concert includes five works never played at the concert before, but all are by members of the Strauss family, who as usual dominate the program, and they go to show the size of the unexplored waltz and polka repertory. The famed Zoroastrian conductor Zubin Mehta, approaching 80, was not heard so frequently anymore when this album appeared, less than a month after it was performed. He has conducted the program before, and he remains one of its most successful exponents, pushing the tempos in a way that fits with the festivity of the occasion in such pieces as Accelerationen, Op. 234 (track 8) and the following Electro-magnetische Polka, Op. 80, whose title shows how up-to-the-minute the music of Johann Strauss II was when it first appeared. The live recording, complete with German-language New Year’s toast answered by the players, is one of the highlights of this series. Pick up a copy to have on hand for next New Year’s Eve!

“It is unashamedly a fun record, and even Mutter has rarely played with such freedom and warmth, obviously enjoying these display pieces every bit as much as the repertory concertos and new works that are her staple diet. The gipsy flavours of the two Sarasate pieces, as well as of Ravel’s “Tzigane,” sound even more exotic than usual, and rarely has the brilliant sound section, with its Hungarian fire, sounded quite so exciting with a stunning accelerando at the end. The tender repose which she then brings to the Massenet “Meditation” is thus all the more affecting…Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, which provides the whole disc with its title, is as high-powered as the Ravel…with James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic providing Mutter with comparably weighty and committed accompaniment, I have to say her performance thrusts home powerfully.” – Edward Greenfield, Gramophone

It has been a long time, and probably stretching all the way back to the now-distant, legendary concerts led by Carlos Kleiber in 1989 and 1992, since we have enjoyed a New Year’s Concert of such quality. With the Latvian Andris Nelsons (known and liked by the Philharmoniker) conducting, this first concert of 2020 had a fluent elegance, a rhythmical verve which was both light and implacable, and a kind of song that allowed the Viennese strings to show off their incredibly silky texture and profound depth.
