Neujahrskonzert / New Year’s Concert 2009 Review by Blair Sanderson
Daniel Barenboim led his first New Year’s Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2009, thus becoming the 14th maestro in this series’ 69th year. This illustrious orchestra maintains a tradition of playing the most popular waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss I and Johann Strauss II, but there are two other composers honored on this program, Joseph Hellmesberger II, with his Valse espagnole, and Franz Joseph Haydn, with the Finale of the “Farewell” Symphony; the latter selection was picked to honor the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death. When it comes to Viennese light music, no ensemble plays it better, and the Vienna Philharmonic gives its all, no matter how frequently it has performed this extremely familiar repertoire. The audience contributes its own energy to the proceedings, and the recordings derive much of their fun from its participation, particularly in the rousing Radetzky March. There is really only one issue with this double-disc from Decca, pertaining to the bass-heavy audio quality that lends the music a thickness that runs counter to the bubbly spirit of the concert. But beyond that technical matter, which is due to the microphone positions, this is a relaxing and jovial celebration, and certainly a fine set of Strauss staples for beginners to explore.

Anyone still reeling from the revisionist austerities of Harnoncourt’s recent New Year’s concerts will be thrilled to hear these somewhat more traditional performances, in which Seiji Ozawa strikes an excellent balance between a healthy serving of Viennese Schlag and an altogether welcome rhythmic discipline. It helps that three of the most enjoyable pieces are making their New Year’s Concerts debut: Zivio (March) and Elisen (Polka francaise), both by Strauss Jr., and best of all the wonderfully energetic Danse diabolique by Joseph Hellmesberger II. This last is a real find. All three add sparkle to the usual fare, including a high-spirited Fledermaus Overture, lilting renditions of the Artist’s Life, Vienna Blood, and Blue Danube Waltzes, and of course the concluding Radetzky March. Anyone cynical about Ozawa’s credentials in Strauss et al will find in this disc a welcome corrective: he makes wonderful music with what is now effectively his orchestra (in its operatic incarnation), and if you think that these pieces play themselves, try some of Lorin Maazel’s New Year’s outings. Excellent sonics too, bright and neat, top off a thoroughly entertaining concert. Pass the champagne! –David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com (more…)

Franz Schmidt was a cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra himself and he allowed the orchestra to premiere his symphony in 1913, which since then belongs in the orchestra’s main repertoire.

With Semyon Bychkov, they are a proven team to champion Schmidt’s Symphony…

The second symphony is the most brilliant and extroverted one with the largest instrumentation. The Strauss „Dreaming by the Fireside“ is a famous intermezzo from the same-named opera by Strauss.

On this album, the work is performed by The Strauss Orchestra.

With nearly five hundred waltzes, marches, quadrilles, polkas and so on in Johann Strauss’ son’s repertoire, it is no wonder that the world-famous Vienna New Year’s Concert – conducted on the 1st January by Riccardo Muti, who is no newcomer to the event since he has led the orchestra in 1993, 1997 2000 and 2004 – still finds new pieces for their “New Year’s Concert creations”. This year, it’s Brautschau op. 417 and Myrthenblüten op. 395. Further novelties come from the Viennese cirlce: father Johann Strauss, with Marienwalzer and Wilhelm-Tell-Galopp, Alfons Czibulka (1842–1894) who kicks off the New Year with Stephanie-Gavotte, as well as a work from Josef Strauss, Wiener Fresken. And of course, as tradition goes, we find The Blue Danube and the inevitable Radetzky March to which the audience applauds in rhythm. By the way, this comes from J. Strauss the father, not from his more famous son. In fact, the concert version is actually an arrangement, very common nowadays, thanks to a certain Leopold Weninger. We would like to add that Harnoncourt performed two versions in 2001, Strauss’ version for the military brass band and Weninger’s version for symphony orchestra, and then again in 2005 in memory of the victims of the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean where the march was not played due to its overly festive nature.

The Vienna Philharmonic’s Summer Night Concert is one of the most visited classical music concerts every year, because it takes place in the festively illuminated palace park of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna in front of 100,000 visitors. In Germany, the popular concert will be broadcast by 3SAT, in Austria by ORF. in 2023, the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanča will be the star soloist for the first time, and for the first time Yannick Nézet-Séguin will be on the podium of the Vienna Philharmonic, which will take the audience to France with a varied program this year: the concert will open with two classics by Georges Bizet: the orchestral suite No. 1 with themes from his famous opera “Carmen” and with the famous “Habanera” aria from “Carmen”, sung by Elina Garanča. The piece “D’un matin de printemps” by the French composer Lili Boulanger, the first female laureate of the prestigious “Prix de Rome” of the Paris Conservatory, who tragically died at the age of only 24 and still left 50 works, is about a spring morning. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the overture “Le Corsaire” by Hector Berlioz and Suite No. 1 from “Daphnis and Chloe” by Maurice Ravel, as well as the famous “Bolero” as the crowning finale of the concert. Elina Garanča presents as a star soloist three arias from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen”, from Charles Gounod’s “Sapho” and from Camille Saint-Saën’s “Samson et Dalila”. The concert will be released by Sony Classical as a CD, as a digital album as well as on DVD and Blu-ray, which reflect the atmospheric staging in the festively illuminated park of Schönbrunn Palace particularly well.

The word ‘vision’ is much misused these days yet to talk of Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s ‘view’ of Bruckner’s Fifth won’t quite do. This is more a realisation than an interpretation, musically vivid but spiritually serene.

I’ve seen it said that the real Bruckner is to be found in his themes, not his developments; that he was an embodier rather than a seeker. Not the least remarkable feature of Harnoncourt’s performance is his refusal to manipulate the structure of the long outer movements – the transitions in particular. This is risky. Scholars worry about what they call ‘disjunction’; so do conductors and listeners. I confess that after first hearing the performance I was more than happy to turn to Franz Welser-Möst’s more theatrical, structurally explicit reading, recorded live with the London Philharmonic in Vienna’s Konzerthaus during the 1993 Whitsun holiday.

Harnoncourt, however, drew me back to his serene – I suspect Baroque-inspired – view of this ‘Symphony of Faith’. Serene but now slow. By the clock, this is one of the quickest Fifths on record, though only the Adagio is taken more swiftly than usual. It was here that Bruckner began the symphony in the pit of despair in 1875 with a keening oboe melody which he marked ‘Sehr langsam’ but scored alla breve. Harnoncourt treats it allegretto after the manner of a threnody by Bach or Mozart, whose Requiem is quoted during the course of the movement. Furtwängler, surprisingly, took a similar view of the movement, as does Welser-Möst.

The ‘liveness’ of the live performance owes much to Harnoncourt – his persona fuelling the music-making not the concept, which is as it should be – though the superlative playing of the Vienna Philharmonic is also a factor. The light-fingered realisation of the exquisite string traceries is a constant source of wonder; tuttis are glowing and unforced. The hall of the Musikverein helps, too; with an audience present it offers a uniquely natural-sounding Bruckner acoustic.
