Walter Wanderley’s debut album ‘O Samba É Mais Samba’ was released in Argentina as ‘El Samba Es Mas Samba Con Walter Wanderley’, the North American market named this LP as ‘Walter Wanderley’s Brazilian Organ’, and a second release in US made it as ‘From Rio With Love’. Wanderley was known for his distinctive staccato stuttering style and mastery of the Hammond B-3 organ and on later recordings and during live concerts a L Series Hammond. Walter Wanderley was already famous in his native country Brazil in the late 1950s and became an internationally renowned star in the mid-1960s through his collaboration with the singer Astrud Gilberto.

Wanderley was already playing the piano at the age of five; at the age of twelve he received lessons in music theory. in 1958 he moved to São Paulo, where he played in the nightclubs and in 1959 he got the opportunity for first recordings, first as an accompanist of Carlos Lyra and his wife, the singer Isaurinha Garcia. Soon he also worked with Marcos Valle, Antônio Carlos Jobim and João Donato. Through the collaboration with João Gilberto, he also gained international fame. From 1966 to 1967 he recorded the three albums Rainforest, Cheganca and A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness (the latter with the participation of the singer Astrud Gilberto) under the label The Verve Music Group and the name The Walter Wanderley Trio, which consisted next to him of Claudio Slon (drums) and Jose Marino (bass). The three albums were produced by Creed Taylor in the United States.

With the US recording of Samba de Verão (also known as Summer Samba or So Nice), Wanderley reached number 23 on the Billboard charts in the summer of 1966.

Wanderley was known for his staccato playing style and mastery of the Hammond B-3 organ. He recorded 46 albums under his own name. Walter Wanderley died at the age of 54 as a result of cancer.
