Chief conductor of Les Siècles symphony orchestra, François-Xavier Roth has been revisiting French music from the beginning of the 20th century for several years now, taking care to honour both the original instruments and to find melodies that favour even greater clarity of timbre and attack. After his incredible recordings of Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky’s first work (special mention to the superb complete version of L’Oiseau de feu), everyone naturally expected the conductor to perform Pelléas et Mélisande, the opera he conducted at the very beginning of his career which is particularly close to his heart.

Debussy’s song cycle Ariettes oubliées of 1888 set six poems from Paul Verlaine’s collection Romances sans paroles, beginning with C’est l’extase and Il pleure dans mon cœur – penetratingly poetic images of love’s ecstasy and rainlike tears of despair. The six Ariettes are the departure point for the arrangement realized in 2012 by British composer Robin Holloway in response to a request from the San Francisco Symphony. Holloway has altered their order while adding a further four Debussy songs, binding the whole work together with brief orchestral links and a feverish epilogue, ‘con moto agitato’. This world first recording is given by French soprano Vannina Santoni, with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under the baton of Mikko Franck. The Finnish conductor, a great admirer of Debussy, here also presents the master’s bewitching masterpiece La mer , first heard in Paris in 1905.

“Incantations” proposes a programme that would trace the history of brass instruments, while exploring the borderline between spiritual and earthly music.

Since it was created in Mulhouse in 1992, the Grand Ensemble de Cuivres d’Alsace has performed throughout Europe. Its members come from the greatest orchestral phalanges (Berliner Philharmoniker, Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo…)
He has developed a unique repertoire through innovative transcriptions, and performs in many different forms and sizes.
Creation is also an integral part of its projects, which is why for the past 25 years the GECA has commissioned numerous composers such as Marc Monnet, Anthony Plog, Benjamin Garzia, and Gustavo Beytelmann.
It works actively in the fields of broadcasting, teaching, interaction with the amateur milieu and interventions in schools.

The Age of Enlightenment has never ceased to fascinate. The philosophical ideas and esthetics it sparked are an unending source for inspiration and artistic research.
Decades of tradition stir passionate debates around the ideal interpretation for music of this period. Yet, if there exists one style of music which remains forever modern, it is baroque music.
If tradition consists of reviving flames, as opposed to venerating ashes, what could be more natural than to interpret this music again and again? Every artist brings a new stone to the edifice of this ideal and eternal art.
Modern or period instruments? Why dismiss a search for authenticity? Why dismiss a more modern way of reigniting flames? Both visions inevitably converge towards a same ideal. With this concept in mind, this recording offers a crossover of two celebrated trombone concerti, with other musical perspectives, such as oratorio, or transcription.
Henri-Michel Garzia offers his enlightenment on these masterpieces, accompanied by l’Ensemble Neophonia, on this journey through a century, a personality, and an encounter with the most primordial instrument, the human voice, incarnated by soprano Vannina Santoni.
