‘The 5 Countertenors’ draws together five of the world’s most renowned countertenors, who bring the rich world of baroque opera to life.

Described in their heyday as “beyond all creatures upon earth.” (William Congreve, 1700), countertenors are once again firmly established on concert platforms, opera stages, the covers of music magazines – and the subjects of heated on-line debate and of fan-pages on social media.

These world-class performers showcase the expressive variety of this unique genre. This album also celebrates the individuality of each singer’s voice and in turn the art of the countertenor. The countertenors are accompanied by the brilliant, ECHO-Klassik winning baroque group, Armonia Atenea, under George Petrou.

Sony Classical present Italian duets and arias with baroque stars Nuria Rial and Valer Sabadus. The Spanish soprano Nuria Rial and the countertenor Valer Sabadus are both stars of the booming baroque music scene. Nuria Rial is a bright soprano with her “addictive timbre“ and Valer Sabadus’s velvety “dramatic, crystal clear and lyric voice” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) are for the first time united in one recording. With the excellent Kammerorchester Basel they send the listener on a voyage of discovery to Italy, to lesser known music by Alessandro Scarlatti, Giovanni Paolo Colonna, Giovanni Gabrieli, Antonio Lotti, Giovanni Battista Bononcini, Bernardo Pasquini and Antonio Caldara. The arias and duets are mainly from oratorios, which have already fascinated many listeners.

World premiere recording of an opera by a Neapolitan master fast gaining a first-rate modern reputation. Max Emanuel Cencic gathers around him an intoxicating mix of stratospheric countertenors, a top tenor, and an orchestra who sizzle with excitement for a performance of an opera that will appeal to all fans of Baroque music’s unsung heroes.

As March’s ‘Five Countertenors’ album showcased, the age of the countertenor is here. Max Emanuel Cencic has gathered around him, once again, a superb cast to bring Vinci’s “Catone In Utica” to vivid life.
“Vinci is the Lully of Italy: true, simple, natural, expressive”- for generations Leonardo Vinci was just another obscure Baroque composer: this first-rate recording will lift the veil from this forgotten genius of Italian opera, and from the mysterious all-male world of the 18th-century Roman stage.

With a libretto by Metastasio, Vinci’s opera was unveiled in Rome in 1728 with an all-male cast (women having been banned from the stage by the Pope): countertenors took the three heroic male roles as well as the female parts.

As well as Cencic (Arbace), the other superb countertenors are Franco Fagioli (Cesare), Valer Sabadus (Marzia), and Vince Yi (Emilia). Tenor Juan Sancho takes the title role (Catone) in this stage work about Julius Caesar’s defeat of the Republican forces led by Marcus Portius Cato in 46BC, and Riccardo Minasi, who enjoys a considerable reputation for his recordings of Baroque repertoire, conducts.

With “Caro Gemello” – their first joint album – countertenor Valer Sabadus and Concerto Köln celebrate the friendship between the castrato Farinelli and librettist Pietro Metastasio The castrato Farinelli and librettist Metastasio were two of the most outstanding musical figures of the 18th century. What few people know is that they shared a strong friendship all their lives. In the correspondence they carried on for many years, they always began each letter with “caro gemello” (“Dear twin brother”) – a sign of their close artistic relationship. This relationship is commemorated by the internationally celebrated countertenor Valer Sabadus and Early Music specialists Concerto Koln in their latest release, “Caro Gemello”. The award-winning musicians recorded technically brilliant as well as lyric operatic arias by Italian Baroque composers such as Nicola Conforto and Antonio Caldara and the German Johann Adolf Hasse. Among the works in which Farinelli performed so superbly and for which Metastasio supplied the libretto are vocal works by Farinelli’s teacher Nicola Porpora. One of the highlights from the operas by Porpora is an aria from the serenata Angelica e Medoro, which marked the beginning of the friendship between Farinelli and Metastasio. As an up-and-coming librettist, Metastasio was commissioned to provide the text for this work in 1720. The 15-year-old Farinelli celebrated his stage debut in the role of the shepherd Tirsi in this work. After this successful start, it was not long before the two became the greatest librettist and singer of their generation. Although Farinelli stopped singing on stage at the age of 32 in order to work for the Spanish court as a theater manager, a flourishing operatic scene evolved in Madrid, allowing Farinelli to collaborate closely with his friend Metastasio. Countertenor Valer Sabadus and Concerto Koln also call this Spanish period to mind with excerpts from two operas by Nicola Conforto: Ezio and La Nitetti, which were composed on the initiative of Farinelli. In 1782 a 15-year friendship finally came to an end. In that year Carlo Broschi alias Farinelli and Metastasio died shortly after each other. Just before his death, the librettist wrote in a letter: “Oh! How much more I would like to share! (…) I hug you, enchanting Carlucciello (little Carlo), and I, your ever identical twin, assure you of my brotherly tenderness.”

Valer Sabadus belongs to the most successful countertenors in the Baroque music scene. He has been awarded several prestigious prizes for his recordings, including the ECHO Klassik 2012 and 2015. For his new album, Valer teamed with the renowned Ensemble Kammerorchester Basel under the direction of violinist Julia Schröder and chose arias by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and arias from the less known operas by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). The concerts with this program received great critical acclaim – “Sabadus looked for arias that would perfectly suit his unique and touching voice and his velvety tone (…) violinist Julia Schröder enters into an inspired dialogue with Sabadus’ voice, which has a crystal clear high register and virtuoso coloratura.” (Südkurier) The album includes arias from Bach’s cantatas “Ich habe genug”, “Vergnügte Ruh beliebte Seelenlust” and “Lasst uns sorgen, lasst uns wachen”, the aria “Et exsultavit spiritus meus” from Magnificat in D Major and the aria “Laudamus te” from the Mass in B Minor. Valer also picked arias from less known Singspiels by Telemann, “Miriways” and “Sieg der Schönheit”, and an aria from Telemann’s opera “Flavius Bertaridus”. The album includes an instrumental piece by Bach, the famous Violin Concerto in E Major.
