This fruitful “encounter” between Leonard Bernstein and Maurice Ravel juxtaposes Bernstein’s intensity and rhythmic vitality with the melancholy refinement of Ravel’s colours, while also highlighting the composers’ commonalities, such as a shared tonal language and masterful incorporation of jazz idioms. Our purpose, however, is not only to appreciate an artistic cross-exchange but also to build upon it. This is what Trio Zadig and Benjamin Attahir seek in Asfar, a new work that springs from the creative nexus of these 20th-century giants and continues the conversation.

The Trio Zadig marks this Saint-Sa”ens anniversary year by presenting him not only as a composer but also as a transcriber of other composers’ works. Rameau’s Pi`eces de clavecin en concerts 1 and 5, together with Liszt’s Orpheus, both arranged by Saint-Sa”ens for piano trio, frame his own op. 92. This programme gives the listener the impression of travelling through both time and space, in the 18th and 20th centuries, in Hungary and in France. The Zadig trio remain true to their quest for unusual and unfamiliar repertoire; following the example of Voltaire’s hero, they continue their adventures in the world of chamber music.

The Trio Zadig releases an elegantly romantic performance of Tchaikovsky’s Seasons. This is probably the most poetic and the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works, with its twelve short pieces, one for each month of the year. The collection was composed at the request of Nikolay Matveyevich Bernard, the publisher of Le Nouvelliste, a monthly music magazine in St. Petersburg. Alexander Goedicke, a Russian composer of the early 20th century made this arrangement of the Seasons for piano trio. The actor Stéphane Varupenne of the Comédie-Française here adds a magically childlike aspect to the cycle: this recording is like a musical book, one that has a poem for each month of the year. These verses can be delicious, charming, lyrical, subtle, and even melancholic, with a typically Russian character that Stéphane Varupenne takes pleasure in imparting. Each piece seems to begin with the words “Once upon a time…”.
