In 1961, the Ventures included Bob Bogle (lead guitar), Nokie Edwards (bass guitar), Don Wilson (rhythm guitar), and Howie Johnson (drums). Their fourth album, “The Colorful Ventures,” was released in October of 1961. It was their first album with a theme, with every song having a color in the title. Although it didn’t generate a hit single, it’s a solid album from start to finish. Highlights include their versions of “Blue Moon,” “Blue Skies,” “Greenfields,” and the rocking “Red Top.” Original instrumentals include “Yellow Jacket” (written by Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards, and Don Wilson), and “Orange Fire” (written by Nokie Edwards). The closing song, “Silver City,” features brass, and could have been used as the theme song for a Western. What makes this album even more impressive is the fact that it was their fourth album released in less than 12 months, after “Walk, Don’t Run” (1960), “The Ventures” (1961), and “Another Smash!!!” (1961).

Twist with the Ventures is the fifth studio album by the band The Ventures; released in 1962 on Dolton Records BST 8010 (stereo) and BLP 2010 (monaural). It consists mostly of instrumental versions of popular dance tunes from the late 1950s to early 1960s, with a couple of original compositions. It was on the charts for 29 weeks and it peaked at # 24 on the Billboard 200. It was later retitled Dance! with new album cover. During the recording of this album, original drummer Howie Johnson left the band and was replaced by Mel Taylor, thus forming the classic Ventures lineup.[3] Therefore, the drum credit(s) are shared on this album between both Johnson and Taylor.

Probably the most prolific group of all time, with more than two hundred albums to their credit, The Ventures could have been forgiven if the standard dropped occasionally. Fortunately, Going To The Ventures Dance Party is one of their better albums, due in no small part to the virtuosity of drummer Mel Taylor. It is he that provides much of the album with its drive, but he seldom dominates the proceedings. Instead, he keeps beat like his life depends upon it and compliments the lead guitar and other instruments to perfection. In light of this, the album deserved much more attention than it received upon its original release, peaking at a lowly #90 on the Billboard album chart.

If ever there was a “band that launched a thousand bands,” it would be the Ventures. Founded in Tacoma, Washington in 1958, their guitar-based instrumental sound would prove hugely influential, inspiring countless followers to pick up a guitar, bass or set of drumsticks and try to emulate their heroes. As these musical neophytes would soon learn, it wasn’t as easy as it initially appeared. The Ventures were masters of tone and technique, deftly arranging their instruments in a seamless approach that was instantly recognizable. Because they were an instrumental group, their songs needed no translation, which resulted in a huge worldwide following. While many rock bands have claimed to be “big in Japan” over the years, the Ventures were the country’s first rock superstars and they maintain a devoted worldwide following to this day. With over 100 million records sold, they are the best selling instrumental group of all time.
