Half Speed ReMasters HiRes Re-Issue: Undercover is the 17th British (and 19th American) studio album by The Rolling Stones, originally released in 1983. After previous album ‘Tattoo You’ which was largely a selection of outtakes, Undercover was their first release of all new recordings in the 1980s. Tensions in the studio were high, with the band’s principal songwriters wanted to take the band in a different direction. Vocalist Mick Jagger wanted to embrace modern trends in music, such as reggae, world-beat, and new wave, while guitarist Keith Richards wanted the band to return to their blues rock roots. As a result, the album is an eclectic collection of songs, covering a wide range of styles. Besides other principal band members Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts, the album featured many guest musicians. It would be the last album released during Ian Stewart’s lifetime, a former member of the band and frequent contributor on piano.

At the close of 1963, the Rolling Stones were, for want of a better word, on a – roll. They’d done okay if not great the previous summer with their debut single, a cover of a Chuck Berry obscurity called “Come On,” which was more energetic than 99 percent of its competition, and then roared into the Top 20 in November with a follow up single, a savage rendition of the Lennon-McCartney song “I Wanna Be Your Man,” complete with slide guitar and a bass that sounded like its amplifier was cranked up to 12.

Billboard 200 – #1 (1971)
Grammy Hall of Fame – Inducted (1999)

“… the Stones at their assured, showboating peak … A magic formula of heavy soul, junkie blues and macho rock.”
– Q Magazine

Sticky Fingers is the eleventh American studio album by the English rock band the Rolling Stones, released on 23 April 1971. It is the band’s first album of the decade and the first release on the band’s new label Rolling Stones Records, after having been contracted since 1963 with Decca Records in the UK and London Records in the US. It is Mick Taylor’s second full-length appearance on a Rolling Stones album and the second Rolling Stones album not to feature any contributions from guitarist and founder Brian Jones after the live album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!.

Sticky Fingers is considered one of the Rolling Stones’ best albums. It achieved triple platinum certification in the US, with songs such as the chart-topping “Brown Sugar,” the country ballad “Dead Flowers”, “Wild Horses,” “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” and “Moonlight Mile”. The original cover artwork, conceived by Andy Warhol and photographed and designed by members of his art collective, The Factory, was highly innovative, showing a sexually suggestive picture of a man in tight jeans complete with a fully working zipper that opened to reveal a pair of underwear. Owing to the damage caused by the zipper to the vinyl disc, and the expense in producing the unusual cover, later re-issues featured just the outer photograph of the jeans.

Instrumentally, the album featured a return to basics for the Rolling Stones. Absent was the unusual instrumentation which had been introduced several albums prior, most songs featuring drums, guitar, bass, and percussion as provided by the key members.

This remastered and expanded release features a bonus disc of alternate and acoustic versions, as well as several live tracks taken from the band’s performance at the Roundhouse in 1971.

Whether it’s the atmospheric reverb on “Midnight Rambler,” Byron Berline’s fiddle (recorded outside on the street) on “Country Honk,” or the meaty bass part that opens “Live with Me,” Let It Bleed has always been an album full of intriguing sound. Add to that Merry Clayton’s unforgettable vocal overdubs on “Gimme Shelter” (as well as its opening ghostly voices, washboard guiro scrapes and reverb-drenched guitar) and Let It Bleed, newly remastered by Bob Ludwig for its 50th anniversary reissue, is an album especially suited to the world of high resolution audio.

Mostly recorded without Brian Jones — who died several months before its release (although he does play on two tracks) and was replaced by Mick Taylor (who also plays on just two songs) — this extends the rock and blues feel of Beggars Banquet into slightly harder-rocking, more demonically sexual territory. The Stones were never as consistent on album as their main rivals, the Beatles, and Let It Bleed suffers from some rather perfunctory tracks, like “Monkey Man” and a countrified remake of the classic “Honky Tonk Woman” (here titled “Country Honk”). Yet some of the songs are among their very best, especially “Gimme Shelter,” with its shimmering guitar lines and apocalyptic lyrics; the harmonica-driven “Midnight Rambler”; the druggy party ambience of the title track; and the stunning “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” which was The Stones’ “Hey Jude” of sorts, with its epic structure, horns, philosophical lyrics, and swelling choral vocals. “You Got the Silver” (Keith Richards’ first lead vocal) and Robert Johnson’s “Love in Vain,” by contrast, were as close to the roots of acoustic down-home blues as The Stones ever got.
