If you love the music of the great American symphonists, get this disc. John Vincent’s Symphonic Poem After Descartes and Symphony in D are not only better than anything Hanson, Harris, and Piston ever turned out, they are as good as the best symphonic works of the middle years of the twentieth century, as good as the symphonies of Stravinsky, Hindemith, Walton, or Martinu. That his music is as tonal as Brahms’ matters far less than that it is strongly argued, profoundly expressive, extraordinarily brilliant, and completely compelling. Eugene Ormandy was compelled: he not only premiered the Symphony in D, he recorded it and then commissioned, premiered, and recorded the Symphonic Poem After Descartes. And apparently Ormandy compelled the Philadelphia Orchestra because the 1957 and 1959 recordings of the works are among the best they ever made together: virtuosic, voluptuous, and altogether virtuous. If you love the music of Victory at Sea, get this disc. Norman Dello Joio’s music for Air Power is just as bombastic, just as corny, just as patriotic, and just as instantly – some might say irritatingly – memorable. Albany’s remastering of Columbia’s original stereo recordings is at least as good as all but the very best digital recordings.

This splendid disc was taped in early 1999 utilizing a simple pair of microphones, a custom built reel-to-reel tape deck, & a tube console. While the recording technology may be atavistic, the engineering is state-of-the-art. No noise reduction was employed, yet my less-than-golden ears fail to detect residual tape hiss enveloping the opulent analogue sonics. The music, though, is what really matters. Sawallisch leads his well-groomed Philadelphia musicians through a well paced, sensitively balanced Liszt Les Preludes. The Dvorak overtures, undervalued showpieces all, benefit from zippy tempos, sensitive section playing, & intelligent dynamic scaling that points up the music’s symphonic implications. Whether you’re a hard-core audiophile or a music lover with low-end components, this winning release does the Sawallisch/Philadelphia team proud all around. Enthusiastically recommended!

The blues is one of America’s greatest cultural inventions—and now, it provides the backbone for one of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Wynton Marsalis’s most innovative and colossal works. In the hands of the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of celebrated conductor Cristian Măcelaru, Blues Symphony (Marsalis’s second symphony) takes the 12-bar blues and explodes it into a lyrical, kaleidoscopic history of American music.

The Philadelphia Orchestra, Yannick Nézet-Séguin – Bernstein: Mass (Live) (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Mass by Bernstein, first performed in 1971, defies classification. It is not really a mass in the strict sense, but more of a kind of deconstruction of a traditional mass; after all, the full title is MASS: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancersand the theme resembles a divine service which turns sour before finally discovering universal peace. At the outset, the world seems to be at one, but then “street musicians” begin questioning the need for, or even the very existence of, a god. Cacophony reigns until the cataclysmic elevation of the host, when finally peace breaks out, when the Celebrant brings everyone together around the holy spirit, before intoning a final “go in peace”. Bernstein’s score brings together all the myriad elements of 20th century music: jazz, blues, rock, Broadway, expressionism, dodecaphonism, modernism with a hint of Britten, street music, fanfares, classical song mixed with rock and jazz voices and Gospel recitations: a veritable Tower of Babel which is hard even to list in a single breath. But Yannick Nézet-Séguin can be trusted to knit all these disparate elements together. Note also that this is a live concert recording, with a breathtaking spatial distribution. Putting history aside, the FBI – never one to miss out on a chance to look ridiculous – decided that Mass was pacifist, anti-establishment propaganda and begged Nixon to boycott its opening night. After all, the work had been commissioned by Jackie Kennedy for the inauguration of the Washington Kennedy Center for the Arts, when America was in the middle of its Vietnamese quagmire…

The Philadelphia Orchestra and conductor Marin Alsop present a live recording with highlights of Gershwin’s self-proclaimed American “Folk Opera” Porgy and Bess, together with a stellar cast and the Morgan State University Choir. Since its premiere in 1935, Porgy and Bess has been one of the most significant attempts to – following Antonin Dvor’ak’s famous instruction of 1893 – create American classical music inspired by Afro-American styles such as jazz, spirituals and the blues. It has also proven to be a powerful catalyst for bringing more diverse casts to the opera stage. The hard-knock life at a Charleston waterfront tenement is presented here by an outstanding cast including Lester Lynch (Porgy), Angel Blue (Bess, Clara and Serena), Chauncey Packer (Sportin’ Life) and Kevin Short (Crown, Jake).

As one of the finest pianists of his era and an improviser of genius, Ludwig van Beethoven’s preferred vehicle for musical exploration was the piano. With his five piano concertos composed between 1788 and 1809, he not only achieved a brilliant conclusion to the Classical piano concerto, but also established a new model for the Romantic era: a sort of symphony with obbligato piano which was to remain a reference point well into the twentieth century.

Introducing the international debut Deutsche Grammophon orchestral album from leading French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the distinguished Philadelphia Orchestra. A powerful musical tribute to the mighty Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977), 35 years after his death, from the young conductor who now continues his legacy. Stokowski spent some of his most important and fruitful years in charge of the orchestra in Philadelphia, in a position that brought him some of his greatest accomplishments. Musical showmanship, free-thinking and a populist approach to contemporary music are characteristics of Stokowski’s distinguished conducting and recording career.

This new album focuses on Stravinsky’s daring, revolutionary and game-changing ballet score, The Rite of Spring – given its American premiere performance by Stokowski and his Philadelphia Orchestra, and a work that reaches its centenary milestone in 2013.

Plus a selection of popular Stokowski transcriptions, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor (J. S. Bach), as heard in its Stokowski version in Disney’s classic Mickey Mouse movie, Fantasia.
