Richter conquered Paris with this kind of Schubert scores. The last and immense Piano Sonata No.21 in B flat major, D 960 (1828) stayed a long time in his repertoire chasing the ‘small’, once faciend sonatas. He captures the brillant ambiguity of these serie of exclamations, more a cycle of irmpromptus than a real sonata dixit Beethoven, its strict architecture opposing its instinctive imaginativness. Richter exudes overwhelming charm of an isolated Impomptu before respecting the post mozartian baroau approach in the 1819 small A major Sonata D 664.

This original programme abruptly juxtaposes early sonatas, based on the models provided by Haydn, with the impatience of Sonata No.22. This longforgotten diptych, as brief and adventurous as it is essential owing to its modernism, foreshadows the return to Bach, given a new treatment by Reger and Berg. Svjatoslav Richter charms with his Haydn-like sense of humor, then sharply addresses the listener in the Opus 54.

Svjatoslav Richter created a stir in New York in the fall of 1960 by justifying Romain Rolland’s judgement of the Appassionata, i.e. ‘a flood of fire in a bed of granite’. A true selfportrait of the artist according to the critics, amazed by his violent and tragical vision in contrast with the one of the 18 Sonata, pastoral and sober. He adored this old fashioned suite, without any slow movement, allying the baroque Morart to the Schumanian forest. He amazes in the famous Tempest more an intimate reflexion than a Shakesperian wrathful fury.

A whole piano revolution was launched in the west (meaning USA) in October and early November 1960. Richter had arrived. He came and conquered. Both in Chicago, where RCA recorded the Brahms Piano Concerto No 2 and New York, where he launched his career outside Russia with performances, not of the usual piano career intros of Tchaikovsky or Grieg, but a bunch of Beethoven Piano Sonatas.

Audiences were mesmerised but Richter didn’t appreciate their ardour. He never went back to the US and he didn’t like his recording of the Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto either. No one seems to know why, other that he hated committing any of his interpretations to record.

If there’s one overriding consideration, his hundreds of recordings have stood the test of time and most have never been out of print. This superb recording of the Brahms second – described by some as a Symphony in 4 movements with piano accompaniment – is, nearly 60 years later, refreshingly brilliant. Its remastering by HDTT is superb.
