On June 3, 2023, Steve brought his essential instruments and soul to the historic First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. With an intention to honor and merge into the sacred space of the cathedral — and merge with the audience — months of preparations blossomed to life in this beautiful performance. Usually months or years separate the show from the recorded release, today — for the first time in Steve’s long history of performances — the recording is available for all just a month after it transpired.

For over thirty five years, Steve Roach has performed in awe inspiring spaces around the world. From a massive cave on the Canary Islands, cathedrals in Europe and the US, to a volcanic lava bed encircled with 64 stone monoliths in Mexico City, all of these experiences informed Steve’s invitation to perform a two-hour set within the historic Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York City in June 2022. Roach built the set’s flow with classic tracks and pieces composed specifically for the massive acoustic sacred space which served as the container for the unparalleled sound and light experience of this music.

What Remains is a dynamic confluence of sonic worlds — four interconnected passages that venture from analog-sequencer driven elegant futurism, to yearning and mysterious tribal ambient, to conclude with the heart-wrenching, pure-atmospherics of the title track. There’s an odyssey-like quality at work here, a revealing culmination of the different electronic musics Roach has developed and explored over the last forty years.

Deep emotion, soulful longing and vast interweaves of sonic epiphanies of grace and beauty are immersed and nourished in a balance of darkness and light. The four distinct — yet allied — movements progress as one stylist space opens to the next, each emerging from the resonance of the previous piece.
