The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Thomas Sanderling perform three works by Russian composers showcasing violin virtuoso Sergey Ostrovsky. Mieczysław Weinberg, while not a household name, was highly regarded by Shostakovich. Guided by Tchaikovsky’s influence, Anton Arensky’s neglected Violin Concerto is notable for its rich vein of melody and delicacy of orchestration. The Violin Concerto by Julius Conus, romantic in its variety of moods and expression, was once equal in popularity with that of Tchaikovsky.
