Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony release Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5, recorded live in concert with Salonen and the Orchestra in June 2022.

Composed in 1915, Jean Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony was commissioned by the Finnish government to celebrate the composer’s 50th birthday, which was declared a national holiday. When he returned home a year earlier from a recent successful trip to America, he heard the news of the assassination at Sarajevo of the heir to the Austrian throne. He had scarcely settled into his life again when, to his horror and disbelief, virtually all Europe was at war. Sibelius had jotted these words in his notebook: “In a deep valley again. But I already begin to see dimly the mountain that I shall certainly ascend….. God opens His door for a moment and His orchestra plays the Fifth Symphony.”

Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra is an avant-garde musical composition written by William Russo in 1968. It combines classical music played by an orchestra with blues played by a four-piece band.

Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra was recorded in 1972 by the San Francisco Symphony and the Siegel–Schwall Band, conducted by Seiji Ozawa. When the album was released the following year by Deutsche Grammophon, it became one of the company’s best selling records, reaching number 21 on the Billboard Jazz Chart and number 105 on the Billboard 200. Side two of the original LP record was Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. When the album was reissued on CD in 2002, the Bernstein piece was omitted in favor of An American in Paris by George Gershwin and another Russo composition combining classical and blues, Street Music: A Blues Concerto.

Recorded at a public concert – as is the case for almost all the albums by the San Francisco Orchestra – this version of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth is Michael Tilson’s contribution to the substantial discography of this phenomenal work. Recall that this sombre symphony was first performed in Saint Petersburg in October 1893, conducted by the director himself, with a decent reception, although the audience was most likely left “wanting more”, as the final notes of the staggering final movement faded into a very un-heroic pianissimo. Recall also that only nine days later, Tchaikovsky left behind this vale of years – there are conflicting theories regarding his death, whether it was a result of cholera, suicide, or something else entirely – and the work was played again a few days later at a memorial service, with a few corrections that the composer had made after the first performance; and henceforth it would be this version, that the writer would never hear during his lifetime, which would be played at concerts.

Michael Tilson Thomas and the Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Symphony present a new live recording of the first-ever concert performances of Leonard Bernstein’s complete score for the beloved musical West Side Story. The recording boasts a talented cast of Broadway actors led by Alexandra Silber (Maria) and Cheyenne Jackson (Tony) alongside members of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. This Collector’s Edition 2-Disc Set includes a 100-page booklet featuring a new interview with MTT, notes from Rita Moreno and Jamie Bernstein, as well as a West Side Story historical timeline, archival photographs, complete lyrics, and rehearsal and performance photos. Presented in a High Definition Premium Audio Hybrid SACD* Set, this must-have album is the latest treasure from the Orchestra’s very own SFS Media label.

The performances were recorded live at Davies Symphony Hall in late June and early July 2013 after Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony became the first orchestra to receive permission from all four West Side Story rights-holders to perform and record the musical score in its entirety in a concert setting. Of the new recording, Michael Tilson Thomas said, “This is a new and rare opportunity to hear Bernstein’s complete score sung by a sensational young cast and a knock-your-socks-off orchestra. The San Francisco Symphony totally understands and feels this music. We show the Broadway roots of the piece and how its universal qualities translate into the way we think about it today.”

Recorded live in PCM 96 kHz/24-bit audio June 27 – July 2, 2013 at Davies Symphony Hall — a venue of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, City and County of San Francisco.
