Principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Jörgen van Rijen is also much in demand as a soloist with a special commitment to promoting his instrument. Various composers have written new pieces for him, including James MacMillan and Theo Verbey, whose works are included on the present release together with Luciano Berio’s SOLO for trombone and orchestra. The present recordings were made at concerts with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Iván Fischer, Markus Stenz and Ed Spanjaard respectively. They have previously been showcased on three different discs on the RCO’s own Live Horizon label, and are gathered together here for the first time. The album therefore highlights the versatility of van Rijen as a musician, but also of his instrument as perceived and presented by three very different composers.

Gustavo Dudamel is back for an electrifying concert at the helm of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducting works by two of Austria’s greatest composers: Mozart and Mahler! Maestro Dudamel and the world-class RCO begin the evening with the perennially delightful Overture from The Magic Flute, one of the Salzburg genius’s many masterworks that combines elements of the fugue and the sonata. They then tackle Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, a work with a traditional four-movement structure but many untraditional aspects—from the predominance of solos over tutti phrases to the unusual sonorities of the scordatura violin and the finale’s soprano part (beautifully sung by the marvelous Camilla Tilling), this rustic and bucolic symphony brims with unique character.

This is the sequel to the highly successful album Brass which put the brass section of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the spotlight. Seven years later comes Brass Too, the pun in the title also pointing to the idea behind this album: the works of Shostakovich and Piazzolla, for instance, were not originally written for brass, but in these arrangements they sound lovely. Although Hindemith is not known as a composer of brass music, he has written for this family of instruments too. The album includes a new work by the RCO’s house composer Detlev Glanert proving that brass can sound completely different.

Following the requiem masses of Dvorák and Mozart in previous seasons, this performance of Brahms’s German Requiem would have been the third in a long series of Requiems conducted by Mariss Jansons. Unfortunately the ‘new tradition’ was cut short by Jansons’s departure as the RCO’s chief conductor during the 2014/2015 season. The performance was dedicated to Kurt Sanderling, one of the orchestra’s most beloved guest conductors. He passed away the year before and would have turned 100 that very month. It proved to be a very moving performance, a fitting salute to a great conductor.

In honour of Bernard Haitink’s 90th birthday this year, Decca presents one of the conductor’s most lauded and respected series of repertoire. Bruckner’s symphonic cycle is played here by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, recently voted by Gramophone Magazine as ‘The Greatest Orchestra in the World’.

Bernard Haitink’s complete survey of the Bruckner symphonies set the standard for subsequent recordings of the repertoire whilst continuing a living tradition in Amsterdam.

Beyond the work of an orchestra and conductor in a golden period, these iconic cycles owe much to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw itself – one of the great temples of culture – and further gained from the vision of Decca’s engineers who created a recorded sound of such striking depth, detail and realism. All these elements combined to attract countless new listeners to Bruckner’s music.
