I thought to post this album because yesterday, talking to my cousin, he told me that Rosana Toledo was our neighbor and that it was my aunt who made the first dress for her to perform on the old TV Itacolomi. So, in honor of the good times, the good memories and my dear aunt Zizinha, let’s listen to Rosana Toledo a little.
Mineira de Belo Horizonte, born in 1934, began her career with her sister Maria Helena Toledo (who would marry Luiz Bonfá). In the 50s he pursued a solo career, consecrating himself with the Moonlight Sonata. Although a romantic singer, her singing style and her voice made her participation in bossa nova natural. In 1975 he participated in the Minerva Project “100 years of Brazilian Popular music”. In 1986 he recreated, in a tribute to Custódio Mesquita, by Funarte, Nocturno em Tempo de Samba and Saia do Caminho.

Saudade Vem Correndo was introduced in 1961 by Rosana Tolédo on her album Sorriso e Lágrima. Also issued on single as A-side to Santo Antônio é Que é Santo by Ary Lobo, the song failed to have notable impact on the charts. However, it was one of the few original songs that Rosana Tolédo had been offered, and with a swinging arrangement by Nelson Martins dos Santos aka Nelsinho it was featured as the first of four uptempo songs on her debut album.

Maria Helena TolédoApart from the original version, Saudade Vem Correndo was recorded only on albums by Luiz Bonfá himself. The first time on his collaboration album with Caterina Valente which was recorded in Hamburg on two days in January 1963.

The next month, Rosana Tolédo’s sister Maria Helena Tolédo, wife of Luiz Bonfá at the time, recorded the song on Jazz Samba Encore!, which was subtitled Apresentando Maria Helena Tolédo and featured her as the first Brazilian singer to record with Stan Getz.

Later that year, Luiz Bonfá recorded a solo version on his album Recado Novo de Luiz Bonfá, arranged by Ribamar.

Rosana Toledo’s got some mighty hefty hair on the front cover – but the album is much less stiff and formal – as the singer really taps into her emotive depths throughout – showing us that although life goes on, as promised by the title, it’s not without its melancholy moments! Arrangements are relatively full, with light percussion underneath larger orchestrations – all handled by Maestro Nelsinho, on titles that include “Nao Me Diga Adeus”, “Salve Ogum”, “E A Vida Continua”, “Porque Fui Te Encontrar”, “Desolacao”, “Pra Que Mentir”, and “Feitio De Oracao”
