The viola da gamba was the preferred instrument of the Baroque era and is therefore not necessarily associated with contemporary music. “The Waves” presents new repertoire for the instrument, compositions and transcriptions. Imagine if Debussy had written some of his Préludes for the melancholy sound of the viola da gamba. In 2023, the young composer Fabien Touchard uses the old sounds for a new work. The gambist Robin Pharo turns the viola da gamba into a contemporary instrument.

Charles Dollé is not an anonymous composer since we know his name and works signed by him. Nevertheless, he remained in anonymity during his own time and until today, where very few records are devoted to him. Edited in 1737 and dedicated to the Prince of Carignan, famous patron appointed intendant of the Menus Plaisirs by Louis XV, the pieces for bass viol with continuo by Charles Dollé are among the last of its kind.
The facts of not belonging to one of the, through generations at the royal music employed, families and the non-achievement of a position at the court might be an answer why today so less is known about Charles Dollé. He remains mysterious, but his music, thanks to his publications transmitted, shows his musical talent and ability as a performer.

Robin Pharo and the ensemble Près de votre oreille offer a fascinating dive into the English vocal repertoire of the late 16th century.
At the end of the 16th century, which was also the reign of Elizabeth I, the fashion for the Italian madrigal had indeed fertilized the English musical genius, already fond of vocality. A rich repertoire was born, that of the Lute Song, a song accompanied by the lute, otherwise known as Ayre. If Dowland’s genius overshadowed his contemporaries, this program seeks to do them justice. It reveals their ability to adapt to the style by developing it into a vocal quartet and by adding other equally interesting instruments. The reduced number of instruments allows us to enter into the intimacy and poetry of these works. Here, we are told of anonymous lovers, of the ordinary beauties of nature, of simple but profound sorrows, and then, of course, of this omnipresent, daily death, which we frequent in familiarity.

Over and above the research on the role of the viola da gamba in the English vocal repertoire, the following programme also seeks to provide an experience of total immersion in the chamber music of this era, which can induce meditation and contemplation as potently as it can arouse humour and joy. Through the work of four major British composers, it presents pieces that the public has too few opportunities to hear, as well as other more famous works which are the glory of the Elizabethan repertoire. “Come Sorrow” is the melancholy title of our programme, but also and especially that of one of the most beautiful vocal pieces written by Robert Jones.
