The Norwegian violinist Ragnhild Hemsing has always incorporated old, Norwegian traditions on her three previous albums for Berlin Classics. This is mainly due to the fact that she not only plays the modern violin, but also the traditional Hardanger fiddle. Already on her first album “Røta” (meaning roots) she played chamber music with the Hardanger fidde. The album was awarded the OPUS Klassik. On the album “Peer Gynt” she played a very original version of Grieg’s drama music together with the Trondheim Soloists. And on her last album she presented violin concertos as well as Hardanger-concertos together with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Ragnhild Hemsing is thus not only an interpreter and representative of Norwegian musical tradition, but also preserves it and leads it into the modern age. In keeping with the pre-Christmas season, she dives deep into the musical tradition of her home region of Valdres on her new album “Vetra”. Winter is the central theme in all her works. The word “Vetra” comes from the dialect spoken in Valdes and means winter. In addition, she has gathered a group of outstanding musicians around her, all of whom are also very familiar with Norwegian musical history.

With “Røta”, her debut album at Berlin Classics, Ragnhild Hemsing presents her Norwegian roots on the violin and Hardanger fiddle, exploring her identity and the connection to her musical education. Central to this is the relationship between classical music and Norwegian folk music as well as the contrast between the different sounds of both instruments. In addition to works by well-known Norwegian composers, Ragnhild Hemsing has recorded four different folk melodies for Hardanger fiddle from her homeland for “Røta”.

The spirit of adventure, braggadocio and tall stories… for her second album on the Berlin Classics label, the Norwegian violinist and Hardanger fiddler Ragnhild Hemsing has chosen to focus on one of Norway’s best known and most legendary characters: Peer Gynt. Although her solo instruments are not part of the original orchestra formation, she chose various sections of the incidental music to the stage play of Peer Gynt op. 23 and had them arranged for her Hardanger fiddle and the violin with string orchestra accompaniment – thereby creating a link to the traditional story of Peer Gynt in the context of Norwegian folk music.

Edvard Grieg (1843–1907), Carl Nielsen (1865–1931) and Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) are generally recognized as the Nordic countries’ most important composers. Nielsen and Sibelius were both inspired and influenced in their early years by Grieg’s music. Their idiom was strongly Romantic, but they managed to create a distinct “Nordic Sound” in which national elements combined with the broader European tradition. This album not only shows this, but also probes the way they were inspired by one another. Moreover, the works on this album are among our personal favourites, with a Northern Timbre we feel resonates, no matter where you are.

Edvard Grieg SONATA no. 3 in C minor op. 45
Jean Sibelius DANSES CHAMPTRES op. 106
Carl Nielsen SONATA no. 1 in A major op. 9
