Une compagnie de danse hip-hop et un quatuor à cordes, impensable ?

Ce n’est pas la réponse donnée par le Quatuor Debussy et Mourad Merzouki, qui se lancent dans le défi d’un spectacle autour de la boxe ; en y mettant des gants, l’univers de combat se crée. Les compositeurs invités sur le ring sont Maurice Ravel, Giuseppe Verdi, Félix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert et son célèbre quatuor « la jeune fille et la mort », Philipp Glass avec Dracula et Henryk Gorecki. Ce n’est donc pas le Ring de Wagner ! Le parti pris des musiciens a été de participer aux recherches chorégraphiques dès le début du travail pour pouvoir créer et choisir ensemble les univers musicaux. D’interprètes, ils sont passés au statut de directeurs musicaux pour mieux s’intégrer au spectacle.
De même la présence musicale sur scène ne se résume pas à une simple interprétation des morceaux musicaux mais à une présence scénique travaillée et pensée avec le chorégraphe.

En effet parallèlement à sa carrière de quatuor à cordes classique, le Quatuor Debussy s’est engagé dans des voix d’exploration des univers artistiques. Parmi les valeurs et engagements du Quatuor Debussy, on retrouve la curiosité, la surprise, le renouvellement, la découverte et le partage. En créant des passerelles avec différents domaines artistiques comme la danse (Maguy Marin, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wayne Mac Gregor, Abou Lagraa…), le théâtre (Philippe Delaigue, Richard Brunel, Jean Lacornerie…) ou encore les musiques actuelles (Olivier Mellano, Robert le Magnifique…), le Quatuor n’est jamais à court d’idées novatrices !

This recording from the Quatuor Debussy offers a comparative look at teh works for string quartet by Dmitri Shostakovich. The programme features String Quartet No. 5 [1952], No. 8 [1960] and No. 11 [1966]: one from each of the composer’s three creative periods, presented in reverse chronological order. The fifth and eighth quartets share a five note motif that also appears in Symphony No. 10.

The Quatuor Debussy were the first signing to new label Evidence Classics back in 2014. Founded by Nicolas Bartholomée, who also created founded Ambroisie, Aparté and Little Tribeca, and Emmanuel Chollet, the creator of label Fiat Lux and ex EMI / Virgin France, Timpani Records and Believe Digital, Evidence is intended to be based on the greatest French and foreign virtuosos but also young talents who will have the freedom to explore many different directories and musical genres.

A century after his death on 25 March 1918, many harmonia mundi artists are eager to pay tribute to Claude Debussy, the magician of melody and timbre, the great ‘colourist’ and father of modern music. We also wished to honour the composer of Pellas as one of those creative artists who, long before Louis Armstrong and Bill Evans, had a determining influence on certain harmonic colours of jazz. Let us therefore salute the initiative of the appropriately named Quatuor Debussy, which, with the friendly collaboration of leading jazz personalities, has revisited the Prludes in its own way. And at the end of the work, what title would Debussy have inscribed? ‘… note bleue’?

Formed in 1990 by a group of young musicians studying at the Conservatoire de Lyon, France, the quartet has gained international renown for its exciting performances and award-winning recordings. The quartet’s performances of the Ravel, Debussy and Fauré quartets are legendary, and these four musicians continue to create new audiences for works of their countrymen such as Lalo, Lekeu, Milhaud and the late romantic composer Ermand Bonnal.
