Galicia, second half of the 13th century: the sadness of a young woman staring at the sea while awaiting the return of her beloved… Beautiful, atmospheric and infinitely delicate, the songs of Martín Codax remain among the finest examples of cantigas de amigo. Influenced by the poetry of the troubadours, infused with Christian, Arab and Celtic symbolism, the songs of Martín Codax nonetheless belong to the Galician- Portuguese world, and totally so. Even today, the desperately sad fado, the Portuguese national song-form, maintains the rhythm of waves and tides and feels like the lament of a woman who looks out to sea and wonders when her beloved will return to her. Singing to the viol, VivaBiancaLuna Biffi gives voice to the human feeling, whilst Pierre Hamon provides evocative interludes on his unparalleled mediaeval flutes, making the waves become sounds, emotions, and words beyond words…

Ce triptyque consacré à la musique de Guillaume de Machaut est important à plus d’un titre : d’abord L’Amoureus tourment marque le premier enregistrement du jeune Marc Mauillon, qui fait depuis une carrière exemplaire et pas seulement dans la musique ancienne. Ensuite chaque volume a reçu les récompenses les plus importantes, à commencer par le “Diapason d’Or de l’année” en 2008 pour Le Remède de Fortune. Enfin, cette musique si vivante sept siècles après sa création, est portée par un ensemble de musiciens qui ont, chacun dans leur domaine, contribué à sa résurrection au plus haut niveau, au premier rang desquels Angélique Mauillon à la harpe, Pierre Hamon aux flûtes et Vivabiancaluna Biffi à la vièle.

Pierre Hamon is perhaps best known as the flautist with Alla Francesca, with whom he has made numerous recordings. Here he takes up the flutes on his own account, in a recital comprising pieces by contemporary composers and a miscellany of elaborations of well known medieval tunes, such as Ghaetta and Machaut’s Douce dame jolie. He is supported by a backing band of four musicians on early instruments, supplemented by a little judicious multitracking and computer enhancement in the modern pieces.
