This recording not only celebrates multiple centenaries of Malcolm Arnold, Ruth Gipps and Dennis Brain (the dedicatee of the Arnold concerto) who were all born in 1921 – but also three composers whose musical language and worlds bear striking similarities. Both Arnold and Gipps were writing at a time when the grain of musical fashion was going against them. It was composers such as Pierre Boulez, Luigi Nono and Karlheinz Stockhausen from the Darmstadt school who were the intellectual fashion of the time, the music much more experimental, serialist and philosophical in its makeup.

Two generous, aristocratic musicians, both of Latin origin, join forces for these magnificent performances of Brahms’ piano concertos. Claudio Arrau spent a substantial period in Berlin, and through his teacher Martin Krause had a line to Franz Liszt, while Carlo Maria Giulini’s relationship with Austro-German music was deepened by his years as a viola player in Rome’s Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, performing under such conductors as Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer and Bruno Walter.

Johanna Martzy (26 October 1924 – 13 August 1979) was a Hungarian violinist.

She was born in Timișoara, Romania in 1924 and debuted at 13. She toured in the 1940s and 1950s. After that decade her renown in North America, at least, declined and her death from cancer, in Glarus in 1979, was not well noted.

She was referred to by Glenn Gould in his essay “We who are about to be disqualified salute you,” as “an artist who has always seemed to me to be, at least in North America, the most underrated of the great violinists of our age.”

She won 1st prize at Geneva competition in 1947.[citation needed]

Among her chamber music recordings those of Schubert have been thought particularly special.

She was married to conductor Béla de Csillery during much of her period of renown in the 1940s and 1950s, but the marriage was dissolved in 1959.

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition contains official remastering of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI between 1946 and 1984, which are now a jewel of the Warner Classics catalog.

For many, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) hailed early in his career as Das Wunder Karajan (The Karajan Miracle) and known in the early 1960s as the music director of Europe remains the ultimate embodiment of the maestro. The release of the Karajan Official Remastered Edition over the first half of 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the conductors death in July 1989 at the age of 81.

He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). EMIs legendary producer Walter Legge sought him out in Vienna just after World War II and the long relationship that ensued embraced recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia (the orchestra founded by Legge), the Berlin Philharmonic (of which Karajan became conductor for life in 1955), La Scala, Milan, and the Orchestre de Paris.

“The five songs that follow the performance of the Fourth Symphony (two from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and three from the Rückert-Lieder) date from the time of the Klemperer/Ludwig Das Lied von der Erde, and rank among the finest examples of Mahler singing ever recorded. Christa Ludwig’s “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”–the most beautiful song in the world?–is every bit as fine as Janet Baker’s more celebrated version on the same label, and Otto Klemperer’s unsentimental conducting style suits the music’s “innigkeit” (“inwardness”) better than Barbirolli’s more affectionate approach.

Christian Ferras, like Yehudi Menuhin, was a pupil of George Enescu. Born in France in 1933, he performed as a young man with such figures as Menuhin, Pablo Casals, Wilhelm Kempff and Karl Böhm, going on to become one of Herbert von Karajan’s favourite violinists. His career was cut short by depression, but this 1958 recording of the Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn concertos shows his artistry – remarkable for its precision and uncontrived beauty – in all its youthful glory.

The first release of Symphony No. 1 (SIGCD484) was met by critical acclaim:

“Perhaps the most satisfying of all [Ashkenazy’s recordings of the Symphony]…” (BBC Music Magazine)

“Ashkenazy knows how to shape detail and soar in the big melodic moments. The Philharmonia sound is muscular and alert, from the opening woodwind solos to the mighty, stirring symphonic tutti of the finale.” (The Observer)
