This is a live performance from 1971 recorded in Monoaural. When HR Remastered started working on the audio files and remastering them they were quite impressed by the very unique and exciting energy: fresh, vital and romantic performance.

This masterpiece by Leoncavallo is super popular for a reason. It is extremely nostalgic, romantic and human. Again, this version has some special magic. It seems like that night everyone was touched! The director Pietro Mascheroni and tenor Pedro Lavirgen are at their best.

Puccini died in Brussels of throat cancer in November 1924. I used to smoke compulsively, almost since I was a child. He liked it as much as driving. He was therefore unable to finish his last opera, Turandot, for which the librettists Adami and Simoni rewrote the text several times. He sketched the ending and asked that it be Riccardo Zandonai who would conclude the work, although it was finally Franco Alfano who did it. The Teatro Real closes the season with the production that premiered in 2018, signed by Robert Wilson and with Nicola Luisotti on the podium, the same duo that triumphed five years ago. ”The tandem worked then and I am convinced that it will do so again now,” Joan Matabosch, artistic director of the Teatro Real, tells OPERA ACTUAL. “Five years ago Wilson premiered this production that promised to be one of his important operatic works due to the affinity between its aesthetics and that of Puccini’s posthumous work, but the artistic results remained to be seen. Today the production has become one of the theater’s greatest international triumphs. And Nicola Luisotti has shown that this colossal score, the most ambitious and well-orchestrated of Puccini’s work, cannot be conducted better.”

Pedro Lavirgen Gil (born on July 31, 1930 in Bujalance, Andalusia; died on April 2, 2023 in Madrid) was a Spanish operatic tenor. He was one of the greatest singers of his time.

Lavirgen first became a primary school teacher, but then took singing lessons with Miguel Barrosa and Carlota Dahmen. in 1959 he made his debut in Zaragoza in the Zarzuela Marina of Emilio Arrieta. In 1964 he won an international singing competition in Barcelona. In the same year, he made his operatic debut at the Opera of Mexico City – as Radames in Verdi’s Aida. Kutsch/Riemens write that this was the beginning of “a brilliant career, especially at the big theaters in Spain and South America”. Although the main focus of his roles was in the Spinto subject (Radames, Casio, Rodolfo), his repertoire ranged from lyrical parts (Herzog, Edgardo) to the hero subject (Otello, Kalaf).

Pedro Lavirgen Gil (Bujalance, 31 July 1930 – Madrid, 2 April 2023) was a Spanish tenor.

He was born in Bujalance, Córdoba on July 31, 1930, to Antonio Luis Lavirgen Martínez and Marcelina Gil Romero. From his childhood he manifests his musical disposition, although there are two facts that lead him to a singing career: on the one hand, his internment, for three years, at the Brothers’ hospital of San Juan de Dios in Córdoba where he was part of the choir and, on the other, the influence of the parish priest of Bujalance, Don Ladislao Senostaín, who organizes a choir and makes him its soloist. After finishing high school, he obtains the title of national teacher and goes to Madrid where, while teaching his classes, he is examined to join the Chamber Choir of National Radio of Spain.

Pagliacci is an Italian opera in a prologue and two acts, with music and libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo. The opera tells the tale of Canio, actor and leader of a commedia dell’arte theatrical company, who murders his wife Nedda and her lover Silvio on stage during a performance. Pagliacci premiered at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on 21 May 1892, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, with Adelina Stehle as Nedda, Fiorello Giraud as Canio, Victor Maurel as Tonio, and Mario Ancona as Silvio. Soon after its Italian premiere, the opera played in London (with Nellie Melba as Nedda) and in New York (on 15 June 1893, with Agostino Montegriffo as Canio). Pagliacci is the composer’s only opera that is still widely performed.

Famous Opera Arias—Pedro Lavirgen, tenor Recorded ‘live’ in various unspecified venues, 1967 – 1978.

Aside from a much-circulated live recording of Verdi’s Aida prized by collectors because of a rare performance of the title rôle by Jessye Norman, a near-unknown recording of a thrilling Barcelona performance of Montemezzi’s L’amore dei tre re, a Buenos Aires Vespri siciliani opposite Martina Arroyo, and a few zarzuela recordings never widely available in North America, the career of Spanish tenor Pedro Lavirgen is little documented on records. Born in Córdoba in 1930, Mr. Lavirgen launched his career, as have many Spanish singers, with performances of zarzuela, Spain’s unique género chico, though it was in Emilio Arrieta’s opera Marina that he made his professional début as a singer. In addition to great stars of the genre like Leda Barclay who enjoyed little recognition beyond Spain’s borders, the great zarzuela recordings of the 1950s and 1960s were populated by some of the greatest singers of the 20th Century, recorded at the dawns of their careers: Teresa Berganza, Montserrat Caballé, and Pilar Lorengar, in particular. Among the tenors heard in many zarzuela recordings, there were Mr. Lavirgen and the incomparable Alfredo Kraus. Despite the power of his singing and an especially firm, vibrant upper register, Mr. Lavirgen never enjoyed the opportunities in the recording studio that benefited the careers of his countrymen, among whose ranks Plácido Domingo and José Carreras should also be included. Like sopranos whose recording careers could never take flight in the vacuum created by the dominance of the major record labels by Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, and Dame Joan Sutherland, it was Mr. Lavirgen’s lot to sing in a time in which, even in its ‘Golden Age,’ the Classical recording industry could promote and sustain only a limited number of ‘star’ tenors, and del Monaco, Bergonzi, Corelli, and, later, Pavarotti were already the darlings of the opera-buying public. Fortunately, tapes were rolling when Mr. Lavirgen gave some of the finest performances of his career, and sixteen selections from those tapes are here compiled and reintroduced to the public by Madrid-based EMEC Distribución.
