Also, thanks to our soundman here Chris Grabowski who increasingly is recognized for his very special “live” sound recordings. On this, the third “Live from the Green Mill ” download, you’ll hear not only the music, but the soft landscape of the club and the city. Larry Kohut is on acoustic bass, Jon Deitemyer is on drums and Jim Gailloreto is on tenor saxophone. The recording is exceptional. I suggest you get one of the better sound file downloads, close your eyes and time travel to this Monday Night at the Green Mill.

Patricia Barber, the performer known for boldly blurring the lines between poetry, jazz, and art song, has announced the forthcoming release of a new all-standards album Clique, due out August 6th in breathtaking hi-fi. The long-awaited successor to Nightclub, her critically acclaimed and fan-favorite first all standards album, Clique features a tracklist of tunes that Barber has frequently performed as encores throughout her illustrious career, including classics by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stevie Wonder, Lee Hazlewood, Lerner & Loewe, Thelonious Monk and more. After growing an international cult following, earning the first-ever Guggenheim Fellowship awarded to a non-classical songwriter, and becoming an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Patricia Barber is back with a “silk, velvet, languid, warm” journey through music history as she “respects traditions, bends them to make her own points, and freshens them into something new,” as noted in the album liner notes by NPR’s Susan Stamberg.

Patricia Barber’s Modern Cool hit like a thunderbolt when first released back in 1998. Featuring the same band as on Cafe Blue with the addition of trumpet star Dave Douglas, the 12-song set is highlighted by Barber originals like “Touch of Trash,” “Company,” and “Winter,” to go along with her version of The Doors “Light My Fire” and her setting of an E.E. Cummings poem.

Among the many accolades received, DownBeat Magazine gave the album a coveted “5 Stars” review calling it “sonically, one of the best recordings ever made by a jazz singer with a small acoustic ensemble.” The response, and subsequent worldwide touring, led to Barber’s signing to Blue Note Records one year later and the New York Times proclaiming: “Barber’s art is the kind of art we need to pay attention to.”

Now, Premonition presents a high resolution, dual layer Blu Ray of this miraculous album. Included are a 5.1 Surround remix (24/96 kHz) by original engineer Jim Anderson and the original 2 track stereo masters in 24/192 kHZ for the first time on disc. The surround remix is stunning, revealing detail never before heard while the high resolution 2 track masters shed new light on the originals!

This Blu-ray edition of Modern Cool utilizes the Pure Audio system, a new technology that allows the user to operate the disc using the onscreen menu navigation or by remote control without a TV screen. Music only release playable on all Blu-ray players.

“Wow! This is certainly a candidate for Best Surround Sound Album of 2012. A Marvelous product.” – Morten Lindberg/Surround Producer 2L Records

Pianist and singer Patricia Barber’s second album (and major-label debut) is a consistently interesting, but not always completely rewarding, array of original instrumentals, vocal standards, and surprise cover versions. The arrangement of “Summertime” that opens the program is eerie almost to the point of creepiness, and all the more effective for it: after a long instrumental prelude, Barber sings the lyrics over the most minimal bass-and-piano unison pedal point, her voice goosed with reverb and wailing softly like a ghost. “Subway Station #5,” the original composition that follows, is nervous, jumpy, barely tonal, and moves niftily from a contrapuntal and polyrhythmic introduction into a straight swing section. The problem is that it lasts almost ten minutes, and by the seventh or eighth minute, its ideas seem pretty well played out. “Or Not to Be” and “Yet Another in a Long Series of Yellow Cars” suffer from similar treatment. But her singing on “You Stepped Out of a Dream” and, especially, her sweet and touching rendition of the soul classic “My Girl” are quietly spectacular. There’s every reason to expect great things of her in the future. –AllMusic Review by Rick Anderson
