Klemperer was born in Breslau, Silesia, the second of three children of parents Nathan and Ida Klemperer. He had a younger and an older sister. The novelist Victor Klemperer was his cousin. He continued his studies, begun at Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main, in Berlin at Stern’s Conservatory with James Kwast (piano) and Hans Pfitzner (composition and orchestral conducting). When he had the privilege of conducting the Fernorchester for Gustav Mahler’s 2nd Symphony under Oskar Fried in 1905, he met the composer in person. The two became friends, and in 1907, on Mahler’s recommendation, Klemperer was given the position of choir director, and later of Kapellmeister, at the German Landestheater in Prague. In 1910, he assisted Mahler in the premiere of the latter’s 8th Symphony.

The epic Symphony No. 2 brought Gustav Mahler and Otto Klemperer together in 1905, when the 20-year-old conductor took charge of the off-stage band for a performance in Berlin. Mahler, impressed, subsequently recommended him for appointments in Prague and Hamburg. In this recording Klemperer rewards the composer’s faith with an interpretation of granite-like strength, drawing magnificent performances from orchestra, chorus and soloists.

“The five songs that follow the performance of the Fourth Symphony (two from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and three from the Rückert-Lieder) date from the time of the Klemperer/Ludwig Das Lied von der Erde, and rank among the finest examples of Mahler singing ever recorded. Christa Ludwig’s “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”–the most beautiful song in the world?–is every bit as fine as Janet Baker’s more celebrated version on the same label, and Otto Klemperer’s unsentimental conducting style suits the music’s “innigkeit” (“inwardness”) better than Barbirolli’s more affectionate approach.

Otto Klemperer leads the New Philharmonia for this recording of Franck’s Symphony in D minor. The Philharmonia Orchestra also performs Schumann’s Fourth Symphony in D minor.

The reissue of classical music masterpieces by ESOTERIC has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) technology to improve sound quality. This series marks the first hybrid SACD release of two selections from EMI classics that have been mainstays of the catalog since their initial release on LP, until the present digital age of CD. These new audio versions feature DSD mastering of the original recordings.

The criterion of re-mastering is to faithfully capture the quality of the original master tapes. ESOTERIC’s flag ship D/A converters, model D-01VU, Rubidium master clock generator model G-0Rb and ESOTERIC MEXCEL interconnect cables and power cords, were all used for this re-mastering session. This combination of highly advanced technology greatly contributed to capturing the high quality sound of the original master tapes.

The Symphony No. 4, another highly successful performance, sports some superb playing by the Philharmonia, and is further noteworthy for its measured (but rock-solid) opening and its surprisingly quick third movement Adagio. On the whole, it’s a highly personal and very effective interpretation. One minor drawback is Elisabeth Schwarzkopf’s cutesy-pooh vocal noodling in the song-finale, but this was the price that Klemperer paid for an EMI career courtesy of Walter Legge (a.k.a. Mr. Schwarzkopf). This finale is, in any case, a child’s vision of heaven, and Schwarzkopf’s bratty approach does remind us that not all kids are angels.” (David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday)
