2021年に生誕90年、没後3年を迎えたロジェストヴェンスキーが40歳の時に旧EMIレーベルに収録した、貴重なパリ管弦楽団とのセッション録音を最新復刻。颯爽とした指揮で当時のパリ管をコントロールする様は圧巻です。レベルの高い奏者達をロシア情緒ある演奏まで引き寄せる手腕もまさに一流。どの曲も生き生きとしており録音も優秀なため、高音質での再現に効果的な音源とも言えるでしょう。今回の発売のために本国のオリジナル・アナログ・マスターテープから192kHz/24bitでデジタル化したマスターを用い、SACD層、CD層別々にマスタリング。新規解説訳付。永久保存盤です。
ロジェストヴェンスキーは晩年特に日本でも親しまれ、亡くなる前年の読売日本交響楽団とのブルックナー5番の演奏は特に聴衆に大きな感銘を与えたことは記憶に新しいです。2021年は生誕90年、没後3年にあたります。残された音源はメロディア含めライヴも多いですが、当時西側のメジャーレーベルへの録音はそれほどありませんでした。若い時からその才能を認められ、早くから西側への客演を続けていた割には少ない印象です。その中でも、若干40歳の時にパリ管弦楽団と収録した今回の「ロシア音楽集」は例外と言えるでしょう。録音を行った1972年と言えば設立されて僅か5年、ちょうどカラヤンからショルティに代わる時期に当たります。フランスのオケらしく我が強い当時の奏者達をまとめ上げる力がロジェストヴェンスキーには十分備わっていたことが、この演奏を聴けば理解できると思います。天才と評価され、ソ連当局が自国に留まってもらうよう手配したと言われた当時のソビエト国立文化省交響楽団(1991-92:音楽監督)が再編成されるのも当然と言える活躍でした。ロシア以外のオケでロシア音楽を聴くならフランスのオケが相応しいというのも良くわかる位の出来かと思います。ここでは、驚く事に各奏者をコントロールするばかりか、ロシア的な音色まで表現させる等、この時期のパリ管ではなかなか他で聴くことができない音楽が再現されています。録音の良さも加わり、熱気溢れるこの盤は隠れた名盤と言えるのではないでしょうか。元々のオリジナル・アナログ・マスターテープの状態も良く、録音の素晴らしさも含め、機知に富んだ天才振りが発揮された節目に相応しいアルバムです。(1/2)

This celebrated recording of Saint-Saëns’ Third stands as one of the very few performances to challenge the acclaimed Munch/Boston version on RCA. It features playing of great panache (with a truly high-voltage finale), and if the strings in the first-movement allegro aren’t as tidy as some, Barenboim more than compensates by taking the movement gratifyingly up to speed. The big question for most collectors concerns the remastering, and here I have to say that it strikes me as an unqualified success.

A successor to Paganini, Henri Vieuxtemps was, in company with Sarasate and Wieniawski, one of the great violin virtuosos of the nineteenth century. These performer-composers have often been accused of possessing an overly showy style, too centred on their own capabilities and inclined to alternate between speed and sentimentality. While it is true that most of their works were written to showcase their own instrumental skills, highlighting a number of technical innovations in the process, it would be unfair to dismiss their music as nothing but spectacular effects and languorous melodies. By skilfully blending a knowledge of the legacy bequeathed to them by their predecessors and a fondness for their respective national folk traditions, Sarasate, Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski all in their own ways succeeded in continuing the virtuoso tradition of expansive passion and exaltation.
