Jean-François Paillard (12 April 1928 – 15 April 2013) was a French conductor.

He was born in Vitry-le-François and received his musical training at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he won first prize in music history, and the Salzburg Mozarteum.

He also earned a degree in mathematics at the Sorbonne.

French chamber orchestra founded in 1953 by Jean-François Paillard under the name Ensemble Instrumental Jean-Marie Leclair, it was renamed in 1959. The ensemble is specialized in the Baroque repertoire and consists of 12 strings and a harpsichord, the position of first violin being hold by Huguette Fernandez until 1969, then by Gérard Jarry.

On 17 July 1717, the orchestra music by George Frideric Handel, storied as the so-called “Water Music”, was performed for the first time in London. At this historical event, a full-size orchestral ensemble accompanied the English King George I on a boat trip on the Tames with great success. In time for the 300th anniversary of this event, the Music Department presents a cabinet presentation with compositions inspired by rivers and seas, from the Danube to the Vltava, from the Rhine to the Isar.

Jean-François Paillard and his chamber orchestra perform Arcangelo Corelli’s “Concerti grossi, Op. 6”. The chamber orchestra of Paillard is perhaps best known from their 1968 recording of Pachelbel’s “Canon”, which nearly single-handedly brought the piece from obscurity into great renown.
