Blue Note Records released a new Deluxe Edition of Norah Jones’ acclaimed album Day Breaks. The expanded track listing includes the addition of nine songs recorded live in New York City during Norah’s memorable album release shows at the Sheen Center’s Loreto Theater in October 2016. The live cuts include versions of songs from Day Breaks like “Flipside” and the Horace Silver ballad “Peace”, as well as fan favorites like “Don’t Know Why” and “Sunrise”, performed by Norah (voice, piano), Chris Thomas (bass), Brian Blade (drums), Pete Remm (Hammond B-3 organ), and background vocalists Tarriona ‘Tank’ Ball & Anjelika ‘Jelly’ Joseph of Tank and The Bangas (winners of NPR Music’s 2017 Tiny Desk Contest).

During 2018, Norah Jones concentrated her creative endeavors on a series of digital singles that found the singer/songwriter stretching herself stylistically. Usually, she pushed herself by teaming with new, unexpected collaborators, including Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy – a tactic that guaranteed a variety of sounds and songs, a practice put into sharp relief by the 2019 release of Begin Again. This brief LP collects the seven songs recorded for this project – all but one released beforehand – and while they’re a disparate batch, they nevertheless cohere thanks to their elegant, elastic experimentation. Jones plays with presentation more than form – arrangements run from the spooky austerity of “A Song with No Name” to “Uh Oh,” an effervescent number that’s deceptively dense – but that’s enough to give Begin Again an elusive charm. Every track seems to hint at a grander version than what was delivered, but the loose ends and modest scale are alluring, since they appear to offer an insight into how this fiercely imaginative, quietly fearless singer/songwriter challenges herself. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The collection presents globe-spanning performances from the U.S., France, Italy, Brazil, and Argentina that were recorded between 2017-2019. The first single, ‘It Was You’, was recorded at the 2018 Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California with Pete Remm on organ, Christopher Thomas on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. Additional musicians featured on the album include bassist Jesse Murphy, guitarist Jesse Harris, flautist Jorge Continentino, and percussionist Marcelo Costa. The 14 songs featured on ‘Til We Meet Again span Jones’ entire career to date from her 2002 debut ‘Come Away With Me’ (‘Don’t Know Why’, ‘I’ve Got to See You Again’, ‘Cold, Cold Heart’), 2004’s ‘Feels Like Home’ (‘Sunrise’, ‘Those Sweet Words’), 2012’s ‘Little Broken Hearts’ (‘After the Fall’), 2016’s ‘Day Breaks’ (‘Flipside’, ‘Tragedy’), as well as her more recent singles series (‘It Was You’, ‘Begin Again’, ‘Just a Little Bit’, ‘Falling’ and the Grammy-nominated ‘I’ll Be Gone’). The album closes with Jones’ stunning solo piano performance of Soundgarden’s ‘Black Hole Sun’, a tribute to Chris Cornell that was recorded at the Fox Theatre in Detroit just days after Cornell’s death following a performance at the same venue.

What does a shrug sound like? On “Don’t Know Why,” the opening track of her debut effort, Norah Jones suggests a few possibilities. The first time she sings the title phrase, she gives it a touch of indifference, the classic tossed-off movie-star shrug. Her tone shifts slightly when she hits the chorus, to convey twinges of sadness; here the casual phrasing could be an attempt to shake off a sharp memory. Later, she shrugs in a way that conveys resignation, possibly regret—she’s replaying a scene, trying to understand what happened.
