Outi Tarkiainen (b. 1985) has rapidly risen to the ranks of Finland’s internationally most successful composers. Born in Lapland, the landscape of this mystic Arctic region has proved a constant source of inspiration for her. This new album by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Nicholas Collon featuring Nicholas Daniel as soloist, includes some of the composer’s most recent orchestral works, including Midnight Sun Variations commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic and by the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Canada, and premiered at the BBC Proms in 2019. Outi Tarkiainen’s works are marked by strong atmosphere and rich orchestral textures.

It is the 1944 Oboe Concerto of Ralph Vaughan Williams, so distant from the terrors of war and so congruent in its combination of reed-instrument soloist and pastoral signs, that gets top billing here. That’s natural enough; it’s a crowd-pleasing work, and because star oboists are a rare breed, it’s not as often heard as other works by this composer. The big news here, however, is that the other oboe concerto on the program, the 2010 Oboe Concerto of Scots composer James MacMillan, just might inspire the evolution of a few more star oboists. Within its mere 24 minutes are large musical spaces with a great variety of musical colors and external references, leading up to an impressive finale that takes corners quickly at the top of the oboe’s range. MacMillan himself, leading the Britten Sinfonia, wisely brackets this work with appropriate chamber-orchestra works: Benjamin Britten’s late Suite on English Folk Tunes: A Time There Was, Op. 90, and his own One, for chamber orchestra. But the star here is oboe soloist Nicholas Daniel, equally adept in the blazing MacMillan finale and in the calmly dreamy Vaughan Williams and the quite grave slow movement of the MacMillan concerto. An impressive addition to the oboe discography, with some of the gnarliest oboe writing since Vivaldi’s concertos for his orphan virtuosi at the Ospedale della Pietà.

A Tribute to Janet.
The Britten Oboe Quartet here makes its recording debut with a programme of its core repertory. It naturally includes the great Mozart Quartet K.370 and Britten’s own Phantasy Op.2, but also two pieces that have a special resonance for the distinguished oboist Nicholas Daniel, because they were commissioned and premiered by Janet Craxton (1929-81), his ‘beloved teacher’ and inspiration, and her London Oboe Quartet. Thus Oliver Knussen’s Cantata (1977) and the delightful Cor Anglais Quartet of Jean Françaix add further variety to a fascinating anthology that also features Nicholas Daniel’s own completion of Mozart’s elegiac fragment K580a.

The legendary British oboist Leon Goossens inspired all the composers represented on this recording, and all but one of the pieces were written for his oboe, on which he premi`ered the works by Delius, Bax, Bliss, and Finzi. The piece by Vaughan Williams is arranged for cor anglais, but it was on his own precious instrument that Goossens would premi`ere Vaughan Williams’s Oboe Concerto, in 1944. Nicholas Daniel has, with special permission from Goossens’s daughter Jennie, recorded Delius’s Two Interludes on Goossens’s (now 110-year-old) oboe, rather than his own modern oboe, and contributes a fascinating booklet note on the influence and experience of playing this instrument.

Lazy Afternoon, retrospectively, expresses the joy of being young, on a hot day in early summer, in the beautiful school grounds near a large tree, which was surrounded by beautiful flowers.

I wrote this arrangement of Lazy Afternoon, for cello solo with string trio and piano, especially for this recording with the Maggini String Quartet. The piano maintains its original accompaniment.

One Sunday evening in late Spring, 2015, Graeme and Penny Kay invited me to their house to talk about a commission. They asked me to write a string quartet lasting seven or eight minutes to be played at the opening of a private concert which was to be given by the Tippett String Quartet at Orford Church on November 28th 2015 in celebration of their joint 60th birthdays, the programme continuing with Janacek’s Intimate Letters, and finishing with Schubert’s Death and the Maiden.

Editor’s Note : A selection of chamber works by Elena Langer (b. 1974, Moscow), notable for their playful counterpoint and delicate textures. The London-based composer delights in exploring the endless soundworlds of voices and instruments. “An enticing sonic tapestry, pitched midway between the expressive avant-garde tumult of Berio and the rough-and-tumble of folk music.” (The Times, UK)
