Michael Drapkin is encouraging the continued performance of masterworks which require the very largest, and most expensive, of symphonic orchestra ensembles, by masterfully rescoring the originals in a compelling and artful way for 31-piece chamber orchestra. These new versions of well-loved masterworks makes the continued performance of these works possible, in a time when economics of the large orchestra – normally between 80 and 105 players – would otherwise have prevented their performance. Brilliant performances of Michael Drapkin rescores are given by the Janáček Philharmonic of Ostrava, Czech Republic, under the baton of maestro Mark Laycock, with audio post-production and mastering by Frederick Hohman.

Astor Piazzolla, the great Argentine composer and bandoneon player, was born exactly a century ago in 1921. Fascinated by the music of Bach, Mozart and Chopin, Piazzolla wanted to compose great classical music. From Alberto Ginastera he received lessons in orchestration, composition and conducting, as well as in literature and poetry. Following his studies with Ginastera, Piazzolla received a scholarship to study in Paris with the renowned pianist and composer Nadia Boulanger. Under her guidance, he began to conceive of and perfect his own style of composition.
