Buoyed by her hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey’s 1994 album Merry Christmas helped reignite interest in holiday albums and went on to be one of the biggest-selling Christmas albums of all time. In keeping with that tradition, 2020’s Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special finds her performing some of her favorite Christmas songs alongside a bevy of guests. The soundtrack to her streaming special, Magical Christmas is Carey’s third holiday-themed album and follows her previous Top Five Billboard 200-charting Christmas albums, the aforementioned Merry Christmas and 2010’s Merry Christmas II You. This time out, she performs new renditions of some of her biggest holiday hits, including “When Christmas Time Comes,” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and “Oh Santa,” the latter of which finds her joined by guests Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson. We also get a festively funky take on “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)/House Top Celebration” featuring Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri. The cliché “meteoric rise” could have been invented for Mariah Carey. This self-titled debut sold over eight million copies, produced four number one singles, and earned her a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Not bad for an unknown 19-year-old. It also set her on her way to becoming the best-selling female artist of the 1990s — a particularly impressive feat considering the caliber of the competition during that decade — largely on the strength of her truly remarkable voice. She swoops across an unbelievable five octaves on these smooth ballads and bouncy R&B tunes, and her vocal control is simply stunning — witness her spine-tingling upper register notes on “Someday” and “Prisoner” to choose just two of many examples. But she’s more than a pretty voice; Carey also co-wrote each of the 11 songs on this album, and though her songwriting chops would improve over the years, the sheer excitement of hearing this talent for the first time makes this a memorable debut.
This extremely impressive debut is replete with smooth-sounding ballads and uplifting dance/R&B cuts. Carey convincingly seizes many opportunities to display her incredible vocal range on such memorable tracks as the popular “Vision of Love” (featured during her television debut on The Arsenio Hall Show, an appearance noted by many as her formal introduction to stardom), the energetic “Someday,” and the moody sounds of the hidden treasure “Vanishing.” With this collection of songs acting as a springboard for future successes, Carey establishes a strong standard of comparison for other breakthrough artists of this genre. ~~AllMusic Review by Ashley S. A strong follow-up to Mariah Carey’s self-titled debut album, Emotions puts to rest any concern of a “sophomore slump.” The same mix of dance/R&B/ballads that gave Carey’s debut such tremendous auditory appeal can be found with equal strength on this release, indicating that placing firm belief in the notion of “Why fool with success?” may, in fact, have its merits. Most notably, the gospel influences of “If It’s Over” (with music co-written by Carole King), the yearning cries for a lost love in “Can’t Let Go,” and the catchy, upbeat title track all serve to send the listener on a musical journey filled with varying emotions.
