In All of Us, Howard’s sonic compositions become a musical language through which he responds to the calamities and destruction of the contemporary world — not reflecting or mirroring them, but speaking to them and illuminating the aural sensations they produce. There are moments in All of Us where it’s clear that Howard has scored music for films, with sweeping orchestral crescendos that could be used to mark visual denouements in works of combat cinema (for example, in the fourth track An Hour Off For Friendship). Yet largely, the tracks are bound by their collective sense of unease and our shared sense of precarity.

Open Heart Story is a contemplative and uplifting journey ranging from intimate solo piano pieces to emotive works for a 23-piece string orchestra interwoven with subtle electronics. It opens with a beautiful piano piece called “Prelude for a Single Voice” – an homage to the composer J.S. Bach whose music continues to inspire Howard. The track “Remembering My Childhood” was influenced by Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Yellow Magic Orchestra – music he used to listen to when he was growing up.

Australian composer and instrumentalist Luke Howard will release his new album “All That Is Not Solid”.

Named after a quote by composer and academic David Toop, ‘All That Is Not Solid’, is his most audacious and exciting album yet. It documents the four concerts Howard played in January of wholly improvised music. The result is Howard at his purest, highlighting his breath-taking melodic talent. The four weekly concerts at Melbourne classical venue Tempo Rubato in January from which these records stem, saw Howard freely improvise for an hour, before a second half of his existing tunes. The shows took place while bushfires raged in Australia. They were nearly cancelled because of the heat, but offered solace and comfort to audiences when they went ahead.
