Liya Petrova presents here the first instalment of a double diptych, featuring two rarely recorded works: Walton’s Violin Concerto (1938) with a prestigious British orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Duncan Ward, and Respighi’s Violin Sonata (1917) with her regular keyboard partner Adam Laloum. The shimmering harmonic palette and the vigorously phrased lyricism of these two works respond almost instinctively to each other and make them a natural coupling.

Liya Petrova burst onto the international scene in 2016 when she took First Prize at the Carl Nielsen Competition in Denmark, chaired by Nikolaj Szeps- Znaider.
Two years later, she recorded the Nielsen Concerto and Prokofiev’s Concerto No.1 with the Odense Philharmonic and Kristiina Poska, which earned her international acclaim from the press: “gorgeous sound – ripe and silvery, phrasing with majestic breadth” – The Sunday Times and “exceptional tonal variety… a marvellous disc” – Gramophone.
Here she joins Sinfonia Varsovia and conductor Jean-Jacques Kantorow to present Beethoven and Mozart’s violin concertos in D.

After Liya Petrova won joint first prize at the 2016 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition, jury President Nikolaj Znaider declared he had been ‘absolutely blown away by how she had absorbed the Nielsen violin concerto – how it had become hers’. From her debut album on Orchid Classics you can hear just why she made such an impression on those who heard her performance.
