Recorded in 1960, The Hottest New Group in Jazz (Columbia CS-8198) was the fourth LP by the vocal trio of Dave Lambert (1917-1966), Jon Hendricks (1921-2017) and Annie Ross (born in 1930, and age 87 at this writing). The group was formed in 1957 and was voted Best Vocal Group in the Down Beat Readers Poll from 1959 to 1963. Annie Ross left the group in 1962, replaced by vocalist Yolande Bavan. Any hopes of a reunion of the original trio ended with Lambert’s death in a car accident in 1966. This 2-CD set also contains their complete albums The Swingers! (Pacific Jazz Records WP-1264), Lambert, Hendricks & Ross Sing Ellington (Columbia CS-8310), and High Flying with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross (Columbia CS-8475), plus two complete 1959 sessions showcasing Hendricks backed by Pony Poindexter and Wes Montgomery.
