Recorded live at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, London on 24 November 2004 (Symphony No. 3) and 27 November 2004 (Symphony No. 5).
This recording features former Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra Kurt Masur, who conducted more than 150 performances in London and internationally during his tenure.
Masur inaugurated the launch of the LPO’s own label in 2005 with live performances of Shostakovich’s Symphonies Nos. 1 and 5.
Kurt Masur was renowned for conducting Beethoven with insight and cohesion; these concert performances were conducted from memory. He sadly passed away in December 2015; this captivating pair of concert recordings from 2004 pays tribute to his musical legacy.

In 1970 Kurt Masur took over the direction of one of the best orchestras in Germany and the world: the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. One year later, in 1971, these recordings of the 12 Youth Symphonies by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy were made. They bear witness to the emergence of a fruitful artistic relationship between Kapellmeister and musicians that was to last 26 years. Bold artistic spirit meets musical excellence here, resulting in a high level of listener enjoyment. Kurt Masur’s masterful interpretation provides a revealing insight into the imagination of a talented young composer. These recordings now shine in new splendour through a loving analogue remaster.

This is the sequel to the highly successful album Brass which put the brass section of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the spotlight. Seven years later comes Brass Too, the pun in the title also pointing to the idea behind this album: the works of Shostakovich and Piazzolla, for instance, were not originally written for brass, but in these arrangements they sound lovely. Although Hindemith is not known as a composer of brass music, he has written for this family of instruments too. The album includes a new work by the RCO’s house composer Detlev Glanert proving that brass can sound completely different.

These symphonies were originally recorded for Philips in 1972 (Nos. 4, 5 & 7), 1973 (Nos. 3 & 6) and 1974 (Nos. 1, 2, 8 & 9). In general the readings are solid, middle-of-the-road affairs, with good sound for their day, but not up-close and as vivid as the state-of-recordings today. Probably the greatest strength of the set is its consistency of approach: Masur does not impose his personality on the music, preferring instead to present rather straightforward performances and let the music speak for itself. And, as we all know, this music can speak for itself quite boldly – listening after listening.
