In a diary entry from the year 1827, Robert Schumann writes: Solitude is the intimate encounter with oneself, […], it is an active, thoughtful, creative tranquility, the active state of the soul amidst the body’s passivity. – Solitude is the nursemaid of all great spirits, the mother of heroes, the companion of the poet, the friend of the arts.
In her new album “Solitude,” soprano Katharina Konradi embarks on a musical journey to explore solitude. On this journey, she is accompanied by poets and composers from different time periods. The Cosmos Quartet from Barcelona joins her on her journey. Art songs by composers such as Robert and Clara Schumann, Franz Schubert, and Hugo Wolf, as well as folk songs and French chansons, are waypoints on this journey on which they explore the various facets of solitude together. Miniatures for solo soprano by the Hungarian-French composer György Kurtág serve as transitional elements, providing subtle and sophisticated coherence. Among the special rarities of the recording are the two Catalan songs by the violinist, composer, and conductor Eduard Toldrà.

That is how it is with our choice of Lieder. The pieces examine the great feelings and issues like love, death, hate, yearning, under the magnifying glass of nocturnal sensitivity. Worlds arise in which one no longer knows what is true and what is not. And that is what is special about our Insomnia: everything is possible, and everything is to be found in the ears and the eyes of the listener.

“Russian Roots” is the debut recording of Trio Gaspard for Chandos Records, for which the group is joined by the soprano Katharina Konradi in a diverse and rewarding programme that explores the Russian influence across almost 200 years of music. A selection of Russian folksongs set by Beethoven, Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio and Seven Romances on Poems by Blok, and Weinberg’s Jewish Songs form the backbone of the recital. These are complemented by vocalises (wordless songs) by Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Gubaidulina, and Auerbach.

A versatile figure at home in lieder and in opera of several types, Katharina Konradi is the first major vocal star to emerge from the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan. Based in Germany, Konradi has appeared in operas by Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner. Konradi was born on June 13, 1988, in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek. Like many people in that city, formerly part of the Soviet Union, she grew up speaking Russian. At age 15, she moved to Hamburg, Germany. Although she spoke no German when she arrived, she succeeded in obtaining her Abitur (secondary school graduation) certificate at the Johannes-Brahms-Schule in Pinneberg in 2009.
