The chamber orchestra Kammerorchester Basel (also: Kammerorchesterbasel) was founded in Basel, Switzerland, in 1984. In the tradition of Paul Sacher’s Basler Kammerorchester, its focus is on both early music and contemporary classical music. The orchestra plays regularly without a conductor with their leading concertmasters Julia Schröder, Daniel Bard and Baptiste Lopez. The Basel Chamber Orchestra is recognised as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the classical music scene. Invitations to the most important worldwide concert houses and festivals shape their agenda, as well as their own subscription concerts in Basel.

There was hardly a music genre more popular at the height of the Classical period than the Sinfonia Concertante. An entirely new concert experience resulted from a combination of a straightforward orchestral setting and brilliant playing by soloists as well as blending elements of the symphony, solo concerto and divertimento. Composers did not score works for individual soloists only, but also created a symphonic genre with as many as nine solo instruments. Under the baton of Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli, the Kammerorchester Basel – one of the best chamber orchestras in Europe and three-time winners of the ECHO Klassik Award – has recorded three of the most interesting and varied works of this genre. The Sinfonia Concertante in F major by the Haydn pupil and Strasbourg cathedral Kapellmeister Ignaz Josef Pleyel (1757–1831) is impressive not only due to the number of solo instruments but also because of its wonderfully refined orchestral accompaniment. The Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major by Mannheim court composer Ignaz Holzbauer (1711–1783) is recorded by a first-rate orchestra here for the first time. A further highlight is the Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major, K 297b, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) as reconstructed by Robert Levin.

The multiple award-winning recordings of the Kammerorchester Basel are a genuine asset to the record market. With “Bologna 1666” they take their listeners on a musical journey to what was probably the most important musical centre of 17th-century Italy. Founded in 1666, the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, one of Italy’s oldest academies of music, influenced the musical life of its times far beyond the borders of Italy itself. It is thus all the more astonishing that with few exceptions, such as Giuseppe Torelli or Lorenzo Gaetano Zavateri, most of its composers have fallen into oblivion. For this recording, the Kammerorchester Basel, headed by its concert-mistress Julia Schröder, have unearthed outstanding masterpieces.

(Rondo).

The eleventh volume of the complete HAYDN2032 symphony cycle moves its focus to Paris: ‘Every day one perceives more clearly, and consequently admires more, the productions of this great genius, who, in every one of his works, knows so well how to draw rich and varied developments from a single subject’, wrote the Mercure de France in April 1788, adding that Haydn was ‘quite different from those sterile composers who constantly move from one idea to another’. The symphonies presented here are no.2 (the first to be published in France), no.24 (the first to be performed there) and the so-called ‘Paris’ symphonies nos. 87 and 82 ‘L’Ours’, with its references to fairground atmosphere and its famous contredanse finale.

Viviane Chassot, Kammerorchester Basel – Haydn: Keyboard Concertos (Performed on Accordion) (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

The accordion was not even known in Haydn’s time, and playing the composer’s keyboard concertos on the instrument carries a strong whiff of novelty for novelty’s sake. Yet the four works performed here by Swiss accordionist Viviane Chassot, one of the accordion’s few players in the classical sphere, are more than listenable. The combination clicks for several reasons. First is that Haydn’s concertos specifically, with their rather muted contrast between soloist and orchestra, work better than Mozart or a later composer might have. Second is the sheer beauty of Chassot’s playing. Sample one of the slow movements, such as the “Adagio cantabile” of the Keyboard Concerto in G major, Hob. 18/4, to hear the shades of timbre she brings out from her accordion; given the instrument’s limited dynamic range, the timbres of the accordion almost take the place of dynamic shifts. It’s a wholly novel effect. Third is the crack work of the Kammerorchester Basel, which lays out flat, fast tutti that sets Chassot’s playing off most advantageously. Sony’s church sound is a bit brittle, and it’s hard to call this essential, but it’s certainly a pleasant hour of Haydn for accordion lovers or anyone else.

The twelfth volume in the Haydn2032 series, in which Giovanni Antonini conducts the Kammerorchester Basel, is devoted to ‘games and pleasures’. The symphonies recorded here, nos. 61, 66 and 69, were composed for the daily theatrical performances held at Eszterháza Palace in the spring of 1776. For Haydn they marked the end of a festive period, before he had to return to the serious business of writing operas. The ‘Toy Symphony’, attributed to Haydn for 200 years before it was discovered that it was in all probability composed by a Benedictine monk, completes the programme in a similarly light and cheerful atmosphere.

Giulia Semenzato & Kammerorchester Basel – Angelica diabolica (2022) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Giulia Semenzato, already renowned for her interpretations of the Baroque repertory and her Mozartian roles, presents here her first solo album. The programme, entitled Angelica diabolica , is devoted to the female protagonists of Ludovico Ariosto, author of the epic poem Orlando furioso , whose emblematic figure is Angelica, a revolutionary heroine, ready to resort to any trick in order to regain her freedom. After the Baroque Rome of Luigi Rossi and his opera Il palazzo incantato (1642), we turn to the galant style of Naples with Nicola Porpora’s serenata Angelica (1720), then to Milan in 1702 with the warlike heroine of Bernardo Sabadini’s opera Angelica nel Catai , before a more melancholy take on the character by Agostino Steffani (1691). These rare numbers rub shoulders with more familiar arias by Georg Friedrich Handel, sung by the heroines of his operas Orlando, Ariodante, Amadigi di Gaula, not to mention the famous enchantress Alcina. Alongside the Kammerorchester Basel, Giulia Semenzato deploys all her virtuosity, vocal agility and feeling for words to slip into the shoes of these women, by turns angelic and diabolical.
