What a development the oboe has had since it was mainly responsible for pastoral moods or laments! At GENUIN, Juri Vallentin captures the entire timbre of a modern instrument on a recording. The prizewinner of the 2017 German Music Competition and other major competitions demonstrates the oboe’s rich tone in interaction with wonderful chamber music partners. A real bridge over the centuries: sparkling baroque music of Pez and Couperin meets exciting sounds of our days from Hosokawa or Erkoreka. An exquisite program, a world-class performance—absolutely recommendable! Juri Vallentin started his musical education early at the age of five by taking singing lessons and he switched to the oboe later on. He studied at the Nuremberg Hochschule für Musik and at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire, where he was the first external student to be directly admitted to the master’s degree program and graduated with highest honors. As a student, he was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and nowadays, he makes guest appearances as principal oboe at the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Bamberger Symphoniker and the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, amongst others. Since 2015, he is principal oboe of the Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover at the Hanover State Opera.

There are melodies that accompany us for a lifetime. You twist and turn them, they can inspire, give hope or comfort. For Johann Sebastian Bach [1685-1750] it was a simple hymn: O head full of blood and wounds. He used this melody again and again, in various settings, in some of his greatest works such as the Christmas Oratorio or the St Matthew Passion. It runs through his life as a red thread, like this concept album: Ebenbild is a continuous narrative in which the boundaries between musical genres and between music and language are blurred.
