Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Anna Szałucka with Tom Freeman – Handel for Trumpet (2024)

This is Jonathan Freeman-Attwood’s tenth solo project for Linn, ‘re-imagining’ repertoire for trumpet and piano as it might have been had history been different. Handel for Trumpet follows similar lines to the previous recordings, going against the grain by presenting a variety of musical genres from major figures before the existence of a modern chromatic trumpet and a grand piano. The programme here is divided, relatively straightforwardly, between concertos and arias and duets (from nine different operas and oratorios), with the brief excursion of an abridged keyboard work from one of the eight ‘Great Suites’. Once again, Jonathan teams up with arranger Timothy Jones to offer versions that bring a new lease to these works. A welcome addition to the trumpet repertoire!

La Trompette Retrouvée is Freeman-Attwood’s second recording in his series with Linn Records and continues to explore his passion for expanding the limited chamber repertoire for trumpet by imaginatively arranging chamber works previously scored for alternative forces. He is joined on this recording by the pianist Daniel-Ben Pienaar. As the title implies, this album contains works by French composers, transforming works originally for forces such as cello, piano and orchestra into convincing transcriptions for trumpet and piano.

Conceived by Jonathan Freeman-Attwood and Mozart scholar Timothy Jones, this programme of four sonatas “by” and “after” Mozart represents a belated apology to the composer on behalf of all trumpet players. Had the trumpet developed into a chromatic solo instrument in the 1770s and 80s – like the oboe or flute – Mozart might have been inspired to write great music for the instrument. Following eight recordings for Linn of similarly re-imagined trumpet and piano music from Monteverdi to Richard Strauss, this recital is a compelling new contribution to the trumpet repertoire with four Classical-style sonatas, drawing on varied styles and periods in Mozart’s music. It exhibits canvases from the Salzburgian church sonata to the strutting swagger of a 21-year-old pianist-composer in Munich and two large mid- and late-sonatas from the golden Viennese years. Accompanying Freeman-Attwood is the multi-award-winning Polish pianist Anna Szałucka.
