Signed to Columbia Records in the mid-1950’s, Johnny Mathis was one of the very first musical artists to embrace the album concept and record fully-realized thematically and sonically coherent collections of songs. His 1958 release, Johnny’s Greatest Hits inaugurated the ongoing “greatest hits” anthology phenomenon becoming one of the most popular albums of all time after spending an unprecedented 490 continuous weeks (almost ten years) on the Billboard Top Albums Chart. To date, Johnny Mathis has had 3 songs inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, achieved 50 hits on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart, and ranks as the #6 all-time album artist in the history of Billboard’s pop album charts. He has received 5 Grammy Nominations, and in 2003 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Science.

Johnny Mathis is teamed with producer, arranger, and writer Thom Bell and his cohort, lyricist Linda Creed. Both became very popular for their works with the Spinners, Stylistics, and others. On this outing, Bell applies his ubiquitous arrangements to the dulcet yet captivating vocals of Mathis. The album did spawn one single in the title track, “I’m Coming Home.” It peaked on the Billboard R&B and pop charts at 92 and 75, respectively. Its flow is as beguiling as a cool summer’s night. Mathis even provides his own renditions of the seldom heard “I’m Stone in Love with You,” “Life Is a Song Worth Singing,” and “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart).” Mathis’ articulation is just as precise as the Stylistics version, but with a classical feel. On the moderately paced “And I Think That’s What I’ll Do,” Mathis blends right in with the dynamic string and horn arrangement that Bell has crafted. Most of these numbers have that Stylistics, Spinners, and even Temptations aura, and are good listening songs. ~ Craig Lytle

“I Only Have Eyes for You” is an album by American pop singer Johnny Mathis that was released on May 10, 1976, by Columbia Records and included two new songs, “Yellow Roses on Her Gown” and “Ooh What We Do”, which was written specifically for him, as well as a contemporary arrangement of the 1934 title track that foreshadowed his recordings of standards that incorporated a disco beat (“Begin the Beguine”, “Night and Day”) a few years later.

The album made its first appearance on Billboard magazine’s Top LP’s & Tapes chart in the issue dated June 26, 1976, and remained there for 15 weeks, peaking at number 79. The following month, on July 3, it made its first appearance on the UK album chart, where it reached number 14 during a 12-week run. On December 1, 1976, the British Phonographic Industry awarded the album with Silver certification for sales of 60,000 units, and Gold certification for 100,000 units followed on April 15, 1977.

Heavenly is Johnny Mathis’ most successful regular album release, exceeded in his catalog only by the compilation Johnny’s Greatest Hits and the seasonal Merry Christmas collection. It’s not hard to understand why; this record is the epitome of Mathis’ approach to music. Standards like “More Than You Know” and “Moonlight Becomes You” are joined by show tunes like “Hello, Young Lovers” and “Stranger in Paradise” and a few more recent titles, such as the Burt Bacharach-composed title song and “That’s All.” The tempos are slow, the strings swell, and Mathis’ vulnerable tenor, dripping with tender emotion yet never missing a beat, soars and swoops over all. The best track, a revelation when it appeared on this album, is “Misty,” a treatment of Erroll Garner’s jazz piano classic with a newly added lyric by Johnny Burke. Few could have carried off that lyric (go ahead, try and think of another male singer of the ’50s who could handle it), but it was perfect for Mathis, and the track was spun off for a single that became his biggest hit in two years and remains one of his signature songs. Though still fairly early in his career, Mathis had done a lot of recording; Heavenly was actually his tenth album release in less than three years (counting two hits collections and the Christmas album). As a result, he was a recording veteran while still being fresh enough to give his performances real feeling. It all came together on Heavenly, Mathis’ longest running number one album which spent more than five-and-a-half years in the charts. ~ William Ruhlmann

Faithfully is an album by American pop singer Johnny Mathis that was released on December 21, 1959, by Columbia Records and continues his trend toward covering ballads alongside an orchestra. While his previous LPs usually offered one or two songs that had not been previously recorded, that number on this project leaped to five, and although the other seven selections were established by other artists, even some of those were lesser-known, such as Jeri Southern’s number 30 pop hit “You Better Go Now” and the title song from the 1953 film The Blue Gardenia.

Over the years Johnny Mathis has recorded a number of Christmas albums and this is a very good example the best of them. Recorded in Hollywood in 1986,a good 27 years after recording his first festive album in New York City with Percy Faith, this album does not contain any traditional Christmas carols but rather an excellent selection of modern pop oriented Christmas songs. This is a lovely album with an excellent choice of songs and the talents of such great arrangers as Henry Mancini,Jeremy Lubbock and Ray Ellis are used here to great effect. All the orchestrations are gorgeous and well balanced and the sound is wonderful.

To add a new dimension there is also a superb choir singing backing vocals along with the splendid orchestra on a number of tracks and Johnny interprets each song in his own inimitable style making this a superb album for the perfect Christmas chillout.
