Even the major dudes of Harry Potter can tell you: There are limits to wizarding. Consider the rarified realm of instrumental rock. For a long time the “holy grail” pursuits were mostly in the direction of mega technique – the ability to cram a zillion notes into spaces meant for four, the knack for creating intricate lines at speeds that register as brain-wave blurs.

Guitar boss Joe Satriani’s ninth album reflects the terrain he’s traveled more than it points to an unexplored one — and yes, that does prove to be a good thing. Satriani has explored many directions over eight previous albums, mashing together rock, blues, jazz, and pure technical proficiency in a dizzying blend that bears his unique signature. Is There Love in Space? recalls two distinct projects from his catalog, the groundbreaking Surfing With the Alien and the exotic Strange Beautiful Music. From the former is the driven, balls-out, tough blues-and-hard rock riffs and hooks, while from the latter are involved and sometimes intricate melodies and Eastern-tinged modes — though none of the electronica. Satriani’s sense of writing catchy turnarounds and hooks is ubiquitous here, and though he uses keyboards, they are never employed as more than devices to further along the framework of a particular tune. Even the vocal cuts here work well, “Lifestyle” with its roosty rock & roll vocal, boogie on methamphetamine whir, and bombastic power chords is a great choice for a single, as is the stomping, metallic “Hands in the Air,” which updates Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild” riff in extremis. The mid-tempo tunes, such as the wah-wah-phased title track and the shimmering “If I Could Fly,” are nice changes of pace too. The funky future blues of “I Like the Rain” features a slightly annoying vocal, but in its ZZ Top-fueled desert boogie, it hardly matters. The masterpiece on the set is “Searching,” however. It’s slow- to mid-tempo stride and minor key cadence pushed to the limit by the razor-wired and feedback aesthetic of its ten-minute sprawling excess. While guitar hero records are anything but cool in the new century, this guitar hero offers one cool little record. –Thom Jurek

Joe Satriani always stood apart from the legions of guitar virtuosos who surfaced in the late ’80s, largely because he had a sharper ear than his peers. He didn’t limit himself to hard rock or heavy metal, preferring to draw in elements of pop and jazz as well. At his best, he stood head and shoulders above his peers, many of whom were his former students. However, his records were a little uneven, especially those featuring his vocals, and it seemed like he had painted himself into a corner by 1995’s eponymous effort. Remarkably, moving to Epic revitalized his career. Recording wih longtime bassist Stuart Hamm and drummer Jeff Campitelli, Satriani turns in an all-instrumental record with Crystal Planet. It’s an instrumental record with a difference, finding the guitarist taking more chances than ever. There are some familiar hard rock and ballad workouts, but what’s astounding about the album is that it shows his technique continuing to develop and deepen, reaching into new, uncharted waters. It’s his finest all-instrumental effort since Surfing With the Alien.

Produced and recorded by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica), Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards, is Joe’s 14th studio album. Once again, Joe is joined by his long-term drummer Jeff Campitelli, alongside newcomers Mike Keneally (keyboards – Frank Zappa, Steve Vai) and Allen Whitman (bass guitar – Mermen). On the eleven tracks that make up Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards, Satriani‟s classic sound is accompanied by a surprisingly rich new texture. The first single “Light Years Away” provides a great introduction to the album, alongside several other high energy offerings, like the anthemic “Pyrrhic Victoria”, “Wormhole Wizards” and “Premonition”.

17 albums in 35 years is an impressive feat. Even more impressive, however, is that Joe Satriani has always kept his quality high over time. he has received 15 Grammy nominations, but has yet to win one. Nevertheless, the musician is one of the best guitarists in instrumental rock today. This is also confirmed by his new, 18th studio album “The Elephants Of Mars”, which also marks the beginning of his collaboration with the earMUSIC label.

The album was made, how could it be otherwise, during the Corona pandemic and an accompanying break from concerts. Satriani and his live band wrote and recorded the 14 tracks in various locations around the world. But despite those constraints, or perhaps because of them, they wanted to do something more ambitious, using their time to create a wide-ranging set of songs that revealed a variety of influences. “We did everything. We tried the craziest ideas. And we tried every idea we had to turn something on its head and see what could happen,” Satriani writes on his website. “Sahara,” the first single from The Elephants Of Mars, is the best example of that.

In the wake of the new record, the guitarist says he challenged himself to create a “new standard” for instrumental guitar albums. He wanted to move away from what he describes as the “classic rock” of the last few albums he’s released. “I want to show people that an instrumental guitar album can have far more creative and fun elements than I think people are using right now,” Satriani says.

Joe Satriani ‎- Surfing With The Alien (1987) [Original US Pressing] {Vinyl Rip 24Bit/96khz}

Joe Satriani ‎- Surfing With The Alien
Label: Relativity/88561-8193-1 | Release: 1987 | Genre: Hard-Rock
Mastered By Bernie Grundman

Surfing with the Alien belongs to its era like Are You Experienced? belongs to its own — perhaps it doesn’t transcend its time the way the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1967 debut does, but Joe Satriani’s 1987 breakthrough can be seen as the gold standard for guitar playing of the mid- to late ’80s, an album that captures everything that was good about the glory days of shred. Certainly, Satriani was unique among his peers in that his playing was so fluid that his technical skills never seemed like showboating — something that was somewhat true of his 1986 debut, Not of This Earth, but on Surfing with the Alien he married this dexterity to a true sense of melodic songcraft, a gift that helped him be that rare thing: a guitar virtuoso who ordinary listeners enjoyed.
Nowhere is this more true than on “Always with Me, Always with You,” a genuine ballad — not beefed up with muscular power chords but rather sighing gently with its melody — but this knack was also evident on the ZZ Top homage “Satch Boogie” and the title track itself, both of which turned into rock radio hits. This melodic facility, plus his fondness for a good old-fashioned three-chord rock, separated Satriani from his shredding peers in 1987, many of whom were quite literally his students. But he was no throwback: he equaled his former students Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett in sweep picking and fretboard acrobatics and he had a sparkling, spacy quality to some of his songs — particularly the closing stretch of the Middle Eastern-flavored “Lords of Karma,” the twinkling “Midnight,” and “Echo” — that was thoroughly modern for 1987. The production of Surfing with the Alien is also thoroughly of its year — stiff drumbeats, sparkling productions — so much so that it can seem a bit like a relic from another era, but it’s fine that it doesn’t transcend its time: it captures the best of its era and is still impressive in that regard.
