Jenny Lin commands a vast repertoire, from the most obscure modern music to the most tried and true of romantic warhorses. An inveterate collector of sheet music, the score to Simple Music for Piano by Giya Kancheli sat on her shelf for a decade… until she had the brainstorm to invite accordion avatar Guy Klucevsek to join her in an amplification of the complete set. Originally the two talked about performing the pieces live, but the right moment didn’t materialize.

Performed here by pianists Jenny Lin and Adam Tendler, Liszt’s rarely heard Harmonies po’etiques et religieuses is a sublime example of Liszt’s early compositions. Lin and Tendler alternate movements of this monumental piano cycle. “Few performers are willing to take on not only its daunting scale but also its grueling restraint – a cohesion held together in a delicate tension of wild Romanticism and controlled transparency. Mr. Tendler and Ms. Lin aren’t typically associated with Liszt, or 19th century music at all. But, to them, that’s part of the fun. It didn’t take long for them to see just how modern Harmonies poetiques et religieuses can be” (The New York Times)

The term étude first started to turn up in musical literature in the late 1700s, and came into common usage in the first half of the 19th centuryeither because of, or in close proximity to, the Paris Conservatoire, where the form was polished and promulgated. The notion of a piece of music exactingly engineered to promote some specific aspect of technique was nothing new; in her public presentations of ‘The Étude Project’, pianist Jenny Lin traces the concept back to Johann Sebastian Bachs Clavier-Übung. Countless composers have risen to the challenge of the étude. This album, the first documentation of a sweeping project conceived by Lin, includes some of the most famous examples Debussy, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Messiaen, Ligeti, and Glass alongside equally noteworthy contributions to the format by such mavericks as Ruth Crawford Seeger, Toshio Hosokawa, and Unsuk Chin. Lin further pairs each of her canonical selections with an entirely new work by a member of ICEBERG New Music, a determinedly heterodox collaborative of 10 gifted young composers who represent a broad range of stylistic inclinations, but who are united by their enduring faith in substance and craft.

On June 5, 2020 Steinway & Sons releases Philip Glass: Piano Works (STNS 30127) from pianist Jenny Lin. The album begins with “Opening” from Glassworks, the composer’s first album on CBS in 1982. In the five movement Metamorphosis Glass reused some of his music from the film The Thin Blue Line. Mad Rush (1979) is perhaps Glass’s most popular piece of piano music. Distant Figure – Passacaglia for Solo Piano (2017) is his most recent piece for solo piano.

Jenny Lin has come to inhabit the soul and best performance practices in Glass’s music. Her result, as you can hear on this recording, is a performance of mystery and humanity.

The night has always been a time of enchantment; it embodies the uncanny, but also the romantic side of human existence. For her new Hänssler release Jenny Lin has selected a program of night pieces that speak to both the sensual and more complex psychological aspects of nocturnal experiences – from Debussy’s “Clair de lune” to Arthur Lourié‘s “A Phoenix Park Nocturne” to Liszt’s “Liebestraum” she evokes sounds, dancing, romance, far from everyday experiences, whispering of things hidden from the light of day.

She evokes thoughts and visions from a shadowy realm that draws us into our inner world. A dramatically styled CD, perfectly expressive of human longing for the other side.

Unlike the only published piano duet arrangement by Max Reger, which has serious performance limitations, Eleonor Bindman’s new transcription of the Brandenburg Concertos highlights their polyphony, imagining how Bach might have distributed the score if he had created four-part inventions for piano duet. With an equal partnership between the two instrumentalists, using the modern piano’s full potential to convey the unique scoring and character of each work, the concertos are ordered to create an engaging listening sequence.
