César Franck’s only symphony came at a time when the French music world was seeking to rival the great Austro-German tradition. The ‘darkness-to-light’ narrative of the Symphony in D minor owes a debt to Beethoven and there is a unique power within its distinctive themes, innovative cyclic form and general gravitas. Franck’s student Ernest Chausson was no doubt inspired by his teacher’s thematic metamorphoses, but the anguished influence of Wagner is also ever present. The published score of the Symphony in B flat major includes many errors which conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud has meticulously corrected after careful study of Chausson’s autograph manuscripts.

The Ireland RTE National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud present this fascinating programme of orchestral works by Georges Bizet, which includes a number of seldom performed works and reveals more of his talent for writing colourful, atmospheric and melodic music. Of note here is Roma, conceived in Italy as a symphony after Bizet had won the Prix de Rome. The work occupied the composer for 11 years before the final version heard on this recording.

Jean-Luc Tingaud and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra perform three works by Paul Dukas, including his iconic The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which almost immediately entered the international repertoire. It was subsequently the basis for a ballet and later Walt Disney’s film Fantasia. For this recording, manuscript sources for the three works were consulted, including the hitherto private proofs of the first edition of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, ensuring rigorously faithful performances.
