‘Miss du Pré allows herself to muse as Elgar’s music itself muses, but she never for a moment overdoes indulgence and each movement has its own strength and coherence. This is on no account to be missed.’ Gramophone Magazine

Recorded live from Tel Aviv in 1972, this piano trio by Tchaikovsky marks Jacqueline du Pré’s farewell to the music industry, the effects of her sclerosis becoming too invasive to allow her playing. For her swan song on record, she is surrounded by the two closest partners of her career: her husband Daniel Barenboim and her long-time friend Pinchas Zukerman.

Although this disc is most famous for being Jacqueline Du Pre’s debut cello recital, we should certainly not bypass the marvellous contribution from the distinguished artist Herbert Downes. Born in 1909 Downes began playing the violin at the age of 10, before going on to study under both Paul Beard and the legendary Carl Flesch. He was a founder member of the famous Philharmonia Quartet in England along with Henry Holst, Ernest Element and Anthony Pini. Downes initial instrument of choice was the violin, but he later became more well known for his playing of the Viola. As an avid collector of instruments and bows he eventually acquired and played a 1560 Gasparo da Salò. These short works contained on the A Side of this superb disc showcase Downes skills an expert chamber music player of immense talent.

Jacqueline Mary du Pré OBE (26 January 1945 – 19 October 1987) was a British cellist. At a young age, she achieved enduring mainstream popularity. Despite her short career, she is regarded as one of the greatest cellists of all time.
Her career was cut short by multiple sclerosis, which forced her to stop performing at the age of 28; she died 14 years later at the age of 42.
She was the subject of the 1998 biographical film Hilary and Jackie, which attracted criticism for perceived inaccuracy and sensationalism.

Jackie was always the most exciting cellist,” Yo-Yo Ma, Jacqueline du Pré’s fellow-cellist, has said. “It would be hard to think of another that took as many risks as she did… always for expressive reasons. There is no other artist who can transfer that sense of excitement onto vinyl.” Here, with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, du Pré performs perhaps the most widely-loved of all cello concertos, Dvorák’s lyrical and stirring epic.

“Towards the end of 1971 the harsher realities of illness dashed all Jacqueline du Pre’s hopes of a studio recording of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano with her husband, Daniel Barenboim. By great good fortune, however, the BBC were present with microphones when they played the cycle during the 1970 Edinburgh Festival. And after long enriching the LP catalogue, this recording has now been transferred, with all five sonatas and the three sets of variations fitted (by the omission of certain repeats in the first three sonatas as well as of all applause) on to only two discs lasting for an exceptionally generous total of 142 minutes.

“Jackie’s musical gift, cellistic prowess and personality were so inseparable that it made her probably one of the most unique musical personalities ever to perform on the stage,” says the great violinist Itzhak Perlman, who knew Jacqueline du Pré well. “Her ability to communicate her art to her audience was uncanny. Besides her flawless and effortless technique, her command of an enormous array of colours was quite phenomenal.” Perlman’s words are borne out by this recital of popular works, in which du Pré’s partners include guitarist John Williams and pianist Gerald Moore.
